Cask-conditioned at the Black & Gold beer festival, the Gryphon, Bristol 2/9/2012. Near black with a slight tan head. Dark chocolate and black coffee aroma with a touch of berry sweetness. Full bodied mouth feel, with more chocolate and fruit flavours, leading to a soft finish. Good.

Half pint, cask ale, hand-pulled at Port Street Beer House in Manchester. Decent off-white head, blanketing the glass. Clear amber coloured body. The aroma is dry with dusty hops and a note of almond. Malt-fruity taste including a touch of grapefruit and almond. Smooth malt bitter endnotes. Nice (07.07.2012).

Hand-pulled cask ale at New Oxford in Salford. Pours a half pint of an amber coloured body with a slight haze and a filmy layer at the top. Moderate smell of malts and fruits. Similar taste profile leading to a nice bitter round off. Representative for the style (Greater Manchester, 05.07.2012).

Nov 2010: My flight to Cork wasn’t until 07.10, so when I saw the Wetherspoons pub (The Argosy) inside the departure lounge at John Lennon Airport, Liverpool, I thought I’d wander over and see what was on cask. Two beers from the George Wright brewery took my eye, so at 05.50 on a Friday morning I order my first pint of the day: The Brewery Cat. Came handpulled into a straight UK pint sleeve. Mid-brown body with an off-white head which produced some good lacing as I down the beer. The beer was a little on the cold side and had a slight haze to it, might even have been a chill haze, the beer being so cold. The aroma had to be found rather than it just hitting you, some faint malt esters could just about be found, the coldness of the beer didn’t help, but it didn’t get any better in the smelling stakes as it warmed to be honest. Pleasant malt flavours, with a bitter, hoppy aftertaste and easy to drink, although I’m always looking at the departure boards and never really settle when drinking in airports.

Wednesday 13th April 2011 finds me at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool again: this time a beery trip to Berlin is the reason. Before I board the plane however I had time to drink and review this beer. Handpulled pint in the Wetherspoons owned bar (Argosy) before the security. The beer was a dirty dishwater orange, murky, dull and cloudy. The head was creamy both in colour and texture, it left some heavy lacing as the beer level sank. The aroma was of wood and hops, oak trees came to mind. The taste was fairly dry and hoppy, not a lot of malts to be found. Medium bodied for a UK bitter and just above average in all aspects apart from the initial look of the beer, which sadly let it down somewhat.
