Description
Burdock brewery set up shop in what used to be an old Portuguese chicken restaurant, and they transformed the space into an artist-driven bar/restaurant/music hall/microbrewery run by a group of musicians and music lovers. They offer a rotating list of clean pale ales, complex saisons, crisp pilsners, zippy sours, and beer-wine hybrids that are all brewed in house.

On tap at Burdock, pours black with a medium tan head. Nose brings out soft dry roasted, earthiness, and crusty bread. Flavour is dry and light on the palate, yet there's a nice earthy dry roast that permeates. Thin on the palate but packs enough of a punch to be worth it. Good stuff.

On tap at Burdock, pours a cloudy blonde with a medium white head. Aroma is quite chalky, with earthy hops, muddled chalkiness and little notice of the Chardonnay. Flavour is a little better, with muddled earthy hops, subdued Chardonnay, and chalk. Too chalky for me, but the subtle wine element does help it for me. Do that on a west coast and I'll be happier. As is, this is alright.

On tap at Burdock, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out grassy herbal notes, biscuity malt and straw. Flavour is crisp, with biscuity malt, gentle herbaceousness, and straw. Clean and bright, but could use more crispness. Pleasant.

On tap at Burdock, pours a clear blonde with a medium white head. Aroma brings out fresh straw and biscuity malt — yeah, that's clean. Flavour is very clean and crisp, with straw, biscuity malt, and a touch of bitter grass. Fresh and nicely biting. Very good lager.

This stout poured a deep black colour with a very creamy tan head. Beautiful lacing. Scents include smoke and cold cuts. And cold cuts being wieners. First swig was a little thin with flavours of smoke, hops, and a little wiener. Finish is more bitter than expected but very drinkable.

(375ml bottle from the brewery) Pours lightly hazy pale yellow with a decent white head. Aroma is bright tart white grape with some pear, lychee, soft stone fruit, peppery florals, fresh grass, some wood, smooth leathery brett with wet hay, a little spicebox, good expression of Gewürz as you would expect from the 49% and Viognier is softer. Flavour is fairly dry and very wine-forward (it is half wine...), nice fruity and slightly spicy qualities of pear, lychee, soft peach, peppery florals, soft spicebox, wet hay and leather, light lactic and acetic acid for brightness, soft woody drydown, finish is peppery, phenolic, fairly dry and lightly tart, some wood, alcohol not totally masked. Light to medium bodied, oily, active carbonation. Nice white wine-dominated wild ale, as you'd expect it feels like a short-contact orange wine with a heavier funk component.

Bottle from Somewhere Inn at the farm. Hazy translucent straw yellow / light white wine pour. Minimal head. Aroma is sharp white wine with saison funk and some stone fruit. Taste is similar. Very sharp and bitter. Lemon. Grass. Farm. Funk. Metal. Quite sour. Palate is nice with soft carbonation. Not my favorite.

375mL bottle, pours a cloudy, murky golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is full of tart, juicy plums, with a touch of white wine must, and light bugs. Flavour is full of tart, juicy plums upfront, balanced by some murky white wine grape must, and some earthiness. The juicy plum character is very nice, but the whole thing seems a bit more muddled than I want.

355mL can, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out rustic funky notes, tart plum, and a bit of grape skins. Flavour reveals a very nice combination of plum and grapes, with the tart plum starting off, and the mouthfeel finishing vinous, dry and tannic, with plenty of rustic, wild notes. Dry, vinous, and plum-y finish. Really nicely done.

375mL bottle, pours a clear vibrant golden bronze with a tiny white head. Aroma is wonderfully fragrant, with lots of gently tart cherries, red wine must, and oak. Flavour is wonderfully integrated, with lots of funk, vinous notes, oak, and gentle tart cherries. That funk and vinous character is wonderfully placed to complement the cherries. Excellent.
