Description
Burdock brewery set up shop in what used to be an old Portuguese chicken restaurant, and they transformed the space into an artist-driven bar/restaurant/music hall/microbrewery run by a group of musicians and music lovers. They offer a rotating list of clean pale ales, complex saisons, crisp pilsners, zippy sours, and beer-wine hybrids that are all brewed in house.

(375ml bottle from the brewery) Pours fairly dark purplish red with a tiny whitish ring and no lace. Aroma is deep cooked dark raspberries, plummy merlot, nice round herbal red wine quality, soft to moderate dusty cellar funk, a little wood. Flavour is a mix of deep black raspberry flesh and a mix of deeper and brighter red fruit red wines, moderate tannin, a little herbal edge, rich earthy quality mid sip on, some leathery Brett, with wood prominent into the finish, tannins are moderate, a little raspberry pop, good minerality. Medium-bodied, light fine fizzing bottle conditioned carb. The fruit addition makes this one of the least wine-like Burdock wine hybrids, but the bar is such that it is still an extremely wine-like beer. Complex and drinkable.

375ml (thx, Peter K.!) @ Matt's new place. Packaged April 2021. Appearance: hazy dark purple with no head. Aroma: huge berries, some funk, manure, and tannins. Taste: along the same, quite dry, lots of berries. Overall: very nice, maybe I would prefer a bit more of sweetness.

Purple colour, some haze. Head bubbles up quickly and fades down quickly. Fairly big vinous character, jammy, slight bugginess. Soft body, rich fruit, good sense of balance. Dry tannic finish. Excellent.

375mL bottle, pours a dark pinkish red with a small off-pink head. Aroma is complex and deep, with lots of thorny raspberries upfront, along with plenty of red grape skins and lots of wild yeast. Flavour is wonderfully dry and buggy, with lots of rich, woody vinous, red grape skins, and jammy, tart, dry raspberries. Complex, oaky, vinous and berry-dominant in all the best ways. Just lovely.

Bottle: Poured a golden color ale with a large white medium off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of funky Brett notes with some grassy hops notes and nice dry ester. Taste is a mix of Brett notes with some funky ester and some grassy notes with a dry finish. Body is about average for style with excellent carbonation. Enjoyable wild ale with a good mix of drinkability and complexity and a neat dry finish.

375mL bottle, pours a hazy pale golden with a quickly-dissipating white head. Nose brings out plenty of acidity from the plums, with some bugs, and light vinous notes. Flavour is buggy and vinous, with plenty of very tart plums, moderate-to-high acidity, white wine, and bugs. Complex, buggy, and acidic finish, with an aggressive carbonation. The plums come across as too acidic, but this is still very nicely made.

very pale straw color. Excellent grassy nose and very beautiful cereal malt character. Light body, dry bitter grassy. The malt doesn’t shine as much on the palate when it’s cold but as it warms its it’s fantastic but the hops have a resiny character. Super light and drinkable. Excellent summer beer. Fantastic

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small, quickly-dissipating white head. Aroma is wonderfully funky, with lots of red wine grape must, champagne-like effervescence, wild bugs, and oak. Flavour is complex, with bone dry red grape must, lots of funk, plenty of wood and tannins. Complex, bone dry, beautifully blended, and funky. Wonderful.
