New, organic tripel under the old Adriaen Brouwer brand, which started off as a remake of the old Roman ‘oud bruin’ series – so one can wonder what a tripel is doing under this brand. Anyway, one of the newest Roman beers to date, on the market since only a few months. Initially very thick, frothy, foamy, egg-white, dense, lacing head, slowly diminishing over a clear and pure ‘old gold’ coloured beer with very vivid, almost champagne-like sparkling; lightly hazy with sediment. Aroma initially a bit lightstruck (strangely, since it comes from a brown bottle) but as usual, this quickly fades, revealing notes of banana, white bread dough, calvados, pear, coriander seed, ripe apricot, minerals, gypsum, meringue, damp straw, jute cloth, chewing gum, moist white pepper, tulips. Fruity onset, explicit ripe banana ester, red apple, pear and pineapple impressions, sweet but soured by very sharp carbonation; supple and round, bready, pale malt sweetish body with a cereally aspect to it, lingering white sugary sweetness and banana ester over a more spicy finish with floral and straw-like hop bitterishness, dusty but not overly soapy coriander seed spiciness, light phenols and a strong, eventually even somewhat wry, calvados- and Poire William-like alcohol glow. The sugary and banana ester sweetness linger afterwards. A bit boozier than Ename Tripel from the same brewery, otherwise very comparable – and equally predictable, so that I am still left wondering what the point is of adding a very Ename Tripel-like tripel to the Adriaen Brouwer brand which historically has nothing to do with tripels to begin with. Redundant beer at best - if this is the only kind of 'novelties' Roman can come up with, I have serious doubts about the commercial viability of this brewery in the long run... I think they would better concentrate on their oud bruin expertise, a local beer style they have literally been brewing for centuries, and create novelties in that direction rather than coming up with yet another cliché tripel.
