This is - LITTERALY - a half rating of Olde Deuteronomy, as the bottle that "Poperinge" kindly sent me, managed to decapsulate itself on the voyage, leaving me with a half bottle upon arrival. Just enough to... Drab chestnut-olive with floating tidbits; no head (surpise). Gorgeous American hopsnose, dry hopsacks, and raisins, sweet cake. Taste the same as above (good hops and sweet fruitcake), but with a liberal dose of liquorice. Sweet corn and a retronasal waft of sageleaf. A bit hot on arrival, but quite agreable all the same. Pretty well bodied, alcoholburn. Seen the circumstances, a real treat. But ye Olde Alley catte brewery ought to review its bottling techniques; this one unscrewed, another of its products shattered, two of a sending of sixteen beers... One is happenstance, two is suspect - anyone a third? Big, big thanks to Mike and Bo.

Bottle (2005 vintage courtesy of Presario): Poured a deep amber color ale with a nice small dark foamy head with excellent retention. Aroma of caramel and figs is clearly evident and it seems this barley wine is more akin to the English style then the US hops heavy style. Taste is very enjoyable with some nice roasted caramel-like malt, sweetness reminiscent of figs and a nice bitter finish. Body is a bit thin for the style but alcohol is well hidden. Good stuff and glad I have some other bottle for aging.

Very dark brown colour. A mixture of light smoke and cheap coffee forms the aroma. The body is thin, and burned out...the downtown Detroit of beer. Hints of smokiness, nuttiness, roastiness...all things I want to see much more than hints of. The body simply isn’t there to carry it along, but then the smokiness isn’t as forthright as it ought to be either.

I was lucky enough to sample a 96 edition of this and it was liquid heaven. This is one of my fav. N.A.B.W. when fresh and age does wonders for this beer. Sherry, caramel, chocolate and dry strawberries compete in the nose, with the sherry coming out the winner. The body is thick and syrupy like B.W. should be in January. The strawberries are stronger in the mouth along with chocolate and caramel. The finish is big, warming and heavy. AWESOME

Dark brown color that has a suprising nose of pine tree, bubble gum, chocolate and nuts. The highly carbonated body is full, slightly sour with chocolate and nuts dancing together. The beer then finishes slightly dry. If there was less carbonation. I would love to try this on tap!

Good luck trying to find this anymore. I know one guy who has one bottle left. I drank this four years old, with no bottle conditioning and it is only a 5% beer, but hot damn, this baby was fine!!!! As soon as you pour it you get a whiff of Bamberg. I thought this smelled alot like beachwood smoked but I guess I was wrong. The smoke is pretty much the only thing in the nose and it is big. The body has well rounded smoked character, but I was looking for more porter qualities. I also picked up a bit of cheese (oh how I regret not having some smoked gouda on hand when trying this one!) in the light mouth. The finish is slightly sour and off dry. WHY don’t they still make this beer. Though if they make again, they need to amp up the Porter part of the beer.

Reddish brown ale with little moka head. Fairly fruity aroma with lots of grape qualities and nice floral hops. Very sweet, with lots of malts, and a nice hoppy finish, with lots of alcohol warmth, but a bit overpowering in the end. Very good body though, complex. Thanks to the Prez!

Hazy amber beer with a white collapsing head. Malt and apple aroma, slightly card boardy. Good mouthfeel of malt but lacking in hops. Slight acicdity near the end. My guess this beer is starting to be off. Thanks Presario.

Amber color, with a HUGE, HUGE apricot nose, quick diminishing head, very sweet malty taste with …. Surprise an apricoty aftertaste, which is not surprising as they use Apricot extract in the beer

A complex spiced ale. A light amber color gives way to a nose of apples, cinnamon, cranberries and a wisp of nutmeg. The body is very light for a 6.5% beer full of pumpkin pie, nutmeg and buttery undertones with a mildy dry malty finish.
