Bottle from Utobeer. Russet brown colour with thin beige head. I was sitting down to enter my ratings from the London Gathering and wanted to reward myself with something good. As soon as I opened this, I was assailed by that typical SN overpowering hop aroma. Some interesting jammy fruit and malt aromas too though. Alcoholic and sweet in mouth with a good assertive hop finish. Just a tad too sweet though. 3.4/5.0 Re-rate bottle from Utobeer, 23/2/07. Well rounded beer. Smooth. Great hop aroma. Some herbyness on top of the PNW mix. The grapey fruity malt is great, warming alcohol, good demerara sugar, fullness and then a fruit/hop finish. Soft in mouth. Alongside SNPA and Celebration Ale, a classic.

2005 bottle. Big grapefruit and pine aroma from a large-bubbled, long-lasting head and amber pour. This is really nicely balanced between the hops and malts, leaning heavily toward the bitter, citrus (grapefruit, pine and orange) hops as it should be. Resiny mouthfeel, nice bite and bitterness that lasts. An emjoyable IPA.

Bottle. Quite fruity aroma. A little teaish and smokey. Pale golden colour, small head. OK bitterness. Has some aroma hops, but it does seem a little watery.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Very dark and pretty with a warm, reddish hue. Creamy, dense head and a nose full of roasted malt. Flavour of roasted malt, but not sharp, bitter or burned - this is surprisingly sweet with notes of chocolate. Very high drinkability and accessibility, with strong flavours in spite of a rather light body. 181005

Bottle. Brownish to black, with a nice dense, light tan head. Roasted, and somewhat fruity aroma with coffee and dark chocolate. Flavour is the same, with hop present. More chocolately than nose. Hoppy aftertaste, and the roasted and chocolaty elements are there too.The thing I like the most about these dark, dark beers, is that they are delicious to enjoy with dark, bitter chocolate. Draft. Blackish beer with a nice biege head. Roasty, coffee, and malt aroma. Roasty flavors - smooth drinking with a slight chocolate presence. Full bodied. Creamy body and enough hops to balance.

On draught at Redbones, 10/6/2005. One finger head, nicely formed. Creamy, beige colored. Beer is borderline transparent/transluscent. You can see through it, but it’s still not clear by any means. Color is an auburn, deep burnished copper. Aroma smells of light grass clippings, at first. Spicy hoppiness in there as well (almost a cinnamon note). Fairly weak aroma strength. Flavor is bready, very spicily hopped, nutty and has bits of dry toffee. Well-malted and very fresh tasting. Minute bubbles somehow provide a very zesty carbonation. It ripples across the tongue as the hops combine with the bready/doughy malt to create a wonderful balance. Brown bread, bits of lightly toasted malt. Nice lacing. Hoppy to the last drop. As expected from these masterful brewers, they do not use American hops. Very little yeast presence, if any. Medium body, quite dry on the end. Tingly, zesty mouthfeel.

Bottle from Utobeer. Not too much subtlety or balance here. Black beer with thin beige head. Over the top sweetish hop nose. Hint of choc/coffee but too dominated by hops. Fullish in mouth. Finish has more choc/coffee at last but still this whacking mack of hops unbalances it.

Draft. Deep copper color with a small off-white head. Nutty malt aroma. Nutty malt flavor with some roastiness and spicey hops. Easy drinking with lingering malts. Not as ’clean’ as many other octoberfests.
