Description
Lizard Ales is a brewery which has been based in a nuclear bunker since 2008. It’s somehow comforting to know that even after a nuclear war, we’ll still have some breweries in production.
Brewed in an old nuclear bunker at Pednavounder on the Lizard Peninsula, Britain’s most southerly point, Lizard Ales have been producing a variety of real ales since 2004 – using only high quality ingredients and traditional methods, the beers from Lizard Ales capture the true flavour of Cornwall.
Lizard Ales is a “five barrel ” plant producing up to 180 gallons per brew – simple ingrdients – water, malt, hops, yeast and salt – The water is local and untreated save for the addition of a little table salt to give extra body – malted barley comes from Warminster Maltings of Wiltshire who malt Lizard Ale’s mainly Cornish barley – the hops are all grown in Kent or Worcestershire the yeasts are built up from fresh batches sourced from St Austell Brewery.

Bottle bought on holiday in Cornwall. Citrus orange wheat aroma. Cloudy pale orange colour. Too gassy. Afraid I wasn’t keen on this one.

Bottle. It pours an almost clear body, amber in color and topped by a small, dense, off-white head. Fruity nose with some strange smoked hints. Some pale malts. Fruity, berryish flavor with some weird smoke like notes. Some bitterness, both initially and in the end. Medium to full body, leaving some rubbery coatings in the mouth. Definitely not a beer I could finish a bottle of. 130216

Bottle at ChrisO Snow tasting, thanks to Chris, 20/01/13. Almost clear dark amber with a thin off white head. Nose carries malt, orchard fruits, sugars, hints of vinegar, wood. Taste follows not a lot of depth to the flavours. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation with a touch of bitterness in the dry finish. Below average beer - Meh !
