Description
OWA beer was born in May 2006. It was born and designed for the best Belgium and Japanese fusion food experience. It is indeed a very good combination with SUSHI and YAKITORI (weet soy sauce). The brewery is located in the famous district of Uccle in Brussels, only 2kms from the Moeder Lambic in Saint Gilles. Leo Imai started to brew in December 2008 and in 2009 he made a kitchen laboratory in the brewery, and researched the best marriage with japanese food.

Flaska på Brekeriet Bar. Smak och doft av jäst, yuzu, grönt te, örter, citrusskal med toner av plommonkärnor. Syrlig, något sträv. Fina smaker och välbalanserad. En smakupplevelse.

Sampled from bottle @ Van Moll Brewpub thanks to Jean Paul. Hazy yellow color, small white to off-white head. Weird aroma of yeast, passion fruit, overripe apples. The combination of these also reminds me of some kind of cleaning agent. Taste is lightly sour, sourish fruitpeel, I guess yuzu, fruitpeel bitter, a hint of rotting fruit. Pretty weird. Interesting though.

The second beer of a Japanese-associated beer company in Brussels. Intended as a winter beer, at least originally, with very thick and frothy, light yellowish beige head and deep, clear bronze colour, not really black as expected. Aroma has a lot of iron, likely the result of head stabilizing agents, along with caramel, hazelnuts, earth, red wine, dates, autumn leaves, some raisins, blueberry jam, some liquorice; lightly and restrainedly fruity but otherwise fairly dry, caramelly and nutty malts, iron, hint of candi sugar sweetness, some leafy hops in the end. In terms of style, this is only a stout if one considers the old-fashioned sweet stout tradition of Flanders, a remnant from the early 20th-century English influence in Belgian beer culture; this particular substyle, of which e.g. Wilson Mild Stout and Pony Stout are surviving examples, involves sweet, straightforward, dark brown beers with not much, if any, roasted character. Seen in this respect, this is quite decent, but lacking a bit in body. I have later tasted this from an older 75 cl bottle as well with very different results, having acquired a kind of vinous tartness (maybe the result of a ’happy infection’?) which actually gave it more depth, but the overload of iron was still there. My rating here is an average of both tastings.

750 mL bottle shared by Travlr at the DC Summer Saison & Sour Tasting, 7/12/14. Bottle 1053/2000. Pours a hazy lemon color with not much of a head. Aroma of fresh yuzu, citrus, herbal, pepper notes. Pale malt and mild vegetal notes. The taste is tart yuzu, citrus, vegetal notes, lemongrass, yeasty finish and pale malt. Medium bodied, lingering spice. Awesome.

2013 bottle. Hazy to cloudy golden color, white head. Aroma of dusty, peppery lemon. Taste is softly sour citrus, decent enough complexity.

Angenehm säuerlicher Antrunk, mild fruchtig. Die Säuerlichkeit wirft leichte Essignoten auf, sehr rund, unauffällig aber gut. 10/13/11/12/9/11

A fine white head on top of a really lovely looking beer. Nice unclear shining golden color. Inviting sour, fruity and some vinegar in the aroma. Pleasant acidity. Pleasant moderate thick body. Fresh bitterness and a balanced sourness. Solid stuff. Fresh and easy drinkable. Smooth flavor. Fruity. Some vinegar. Mild sour.

Pours hazy orange, one finger white head dissipating quickly with a lasting ring on the surface. Aroma is funky, some horse blanket, a subtle plum note. Taste is a bit sweeter than expected initially before a good lambik taste with tartness comes along, rhubarb, now the plums get more room, ends dry and funky with plums. Medium body, soft to medium carbo, sticky dry texture. Refreshing.

750 ml. bottle sampled as “OWA Merry Christmas 2011” @ Barley Legal Tasting Room. Thanks to Kraddel! Dark brown, reasonable tanned head. Lots of glue / red wine , bit thin roasted, chocolate in the nose. Huge red wine everywhere in the taste, oak & tannins are a bit lighter in the back, sour red wine finish, grainy bit thin malt, dark fruits; skins. Bit thin, way nicer than the base beer but the base beer not being all that stellar keeps this from reaching real heights despite being a big step forward & quite lovely. The price tag from what I hear for this one is ridiculous.
