Patrick picked up homebrewing as a hobby, later to become an obsession, as a distraction to the banality of law school. Soon he was winning numerous awards for his beers and driving his wife, Rachel, mad with the messes that he would leave on the kitchen stove. Upon finishing school, he took it upon himself to draw up a business plan rather than study for the California Bar exam – a risky endeavor that shows through still today in the creative, genre-tilting beers that The Bruery prides itself on.
The Bruery is founded on the excitement that Patrick felt in those first years of homebrewing and we continue to strive for that same passion in every aspect of our business today. We never stop challenging ourselves to develop distinctive & imaginative beers, constantly pursuing improvement in all that we do. We brew dozens of original beers each year with our list of ingredients and inspirations growing perpetually. Our collection of oak barrels has also become a primary element of our brewery. Nearly half of our beer is aged in wine or spirit barrels bringing forth flavors reminiscent of the Belgian countryside or classic American distillers.

Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: black in color with a finger and a quarter of khaki foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: milk chocolate, vanilla, dark chocolate, dark fruits, some muddled earthy spices; molasses, light honey, sweet woody/barrel
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a fine variety of sweetness tones, those light earthy spices slide in underneath (they seem too muddled for me to tell what they actually were); finishes chocolatey with sweet barrel and molasses-like tones
Texture: medium bodied, great sipper; pretty smooth along the tongue and some light touches of barrel trying to show super light assertive vibes on the tongue
Overall: a nicely done barrel impy stout I would welcome again!

Appearance: dark brown close to black in color with a finger's worth of eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: milk chocolate, spearmint, black licorice, light molasses-like tones; confectioner sugar
Flavor: that minty sweet to underlying spicy-like vibe with the milk chocolate - I believe I get what they're trying to do; finishes like a peppermint paddy to me
Texture: about medium bodied - maybe a touch under; good as a sipper: good smoothness to this beer
Overall: while I've talked with some of my friends who have had this beer and they say this tastes like toothpaste, to me, it's more like a peppermint paddy

Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: dark pink to glossy red sort of color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: sweet to tart cherries; slight oaky sweetness; light lemon sweetness; with some tart character
Flavor: leads with the tart then has a slight sweet character of the cherries in there; lemon doesn't show up as strong here; finishes mostly with the tart cherries
Texture: light to medium bodied; good as a sipper; some smoothness but also light tart fixtures embrace the tongue in a semi-assertive way
Overall: nicely done cherry tart ale I would welcome again.

Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: black in the pour and black in the glass; small cap of a little white foamy head which dissipated fairly quick and didn't leave any lace
Aroma: the amount of nutmeg, ginger and allspice in this is extremely high; some Belgian sugars, candied dark fruity tones, chocolate malts are in there but seem a bit overshadowed by those spices I already mentioned
Flavor: leads with those spices I previously mentioned then some sweetness from those malts; finishes with those spices and Belgiany-like sweet tones and malts
Texture: medium bodied, good as a sipper; light smoothness as the spices do make a good play at some assertive qualities
Overall: I might not see this as a true Belgian quad as there's so much spices that seem to block the "Belgian quad" parts from coming out but there's something actually somewhat good about this so I would give it another chance if given.

Appearance: copper color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: light coconut and honey in the front, then sweet wheat with some vanilla; caramel tones and some woody/barrel sweet whiffs, light chocolate further in the back
Flavor: blends all the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet quality encompassing a wide spectrum of various sweet tones; finishes with honey, some light tones of white chocolate and some caramel
Texture: medium bodied, good sipper; I see the normal "syrupy/sticky" notes of a normal wheatwine have been roughed up a bit to take away from that character - good job at The Bruery for doing that
Overall: I say a nice wheatwine I would welcome again

Can into tulip.
Appearance: clear copper color with a finger and a half's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: cinnamon and vanilla sweetness up front with a light white rice scent; lighter notes of lactose further underneath
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas together in a fairly sweet to slightly spicy sort of way; finishes with the cinnamon and vanilla and/or lactose
Texture: light to medium bodied, somewhat sessionable; some smoothness and the cinnamon doesn't seem to be abrasive at all
Overall: nice way of reinventing a blonde ale, I'd have this again.

Backlog May 2014. Unclear orange body under a big, creamy white head. Mild, delicate, spicy aroma with hint of pale malt, dry fruit and alcohol. Aroma gives a certain sweet sugary impression. Taste is in the same direction, mild, delicate, spicy, sweet with quite much oak and some more alcohol in aftertaste. Nice, but a bit too sweet for my taste.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours translucent gold with a large creamy white head that persisted. Aroma is rather light grapefruit. Near med body. Flavor has some malt and rather light grapefruit. Somewhat bitter. To me the ABV indicates they didn't use a lot of grapefruit juice.
