Description
The future of beer lies in the past.

Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.

In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.

A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.

So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.

The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

Bright clear gold beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and has a decent minerally carbonation. Thin malts, mildly sweet. Sweetish pine and a touch of candy fruits. Light hop orange and orange peel. Light semi dry finish. Hangs together well, sweeter than your average IPA but tasty.

330 ml bottle @ Christianssand Brygghus. Clear, dark amber body with a big, stable, creamy tan head. Quite mild aroma of malt, caramel and some toast. Flavor is medium sweet malt, caramel, some dark fruit and moderate bitterness. Medium body and a bit short in aftertaste. A little hint of milk chocolate in the aftertaste by the way. Sure a decent gluten free beer I could drink whenever, not depending on the gluten aspect. Nice and easy.

(Bottle) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of dark rye bread, caramel, dried fruit, hints of treacle and liquorice. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, raisins, crisp-bread, brown sugar, caramel and a mild, herbal bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with balanced sweetness. The malt character is a bit metallic and hollow, but taste is quite nice. Quite enjoyable.

330ml bottle thanks to djoeye for sharing. Rocky fawn-coloured head. Opaque dark red body. Sweet fruity nose with toffee. Taste of sweet plums, toffee, and yeast. Rather sweet fruity end. Drinkable, but a tad too sweet and unvaried (Tromsø 27.05.2015). --- Beer merged from original tick of Gutsy Dark Ale on 20 Jul 2021 at 18:14 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 5 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 6.5. Original review text: 330ml bottle, Brew5, kindly shared by Finn. A gusher! Huge off-white head, unclear copper coloured body, fair lacing. Moderate brown malty smell, scent of berries. Blended taste of berry-fruits and caramel malts, a bit doughy. Mid-sweet malty ending. Satisfying. (Tromsø 20.07.2021).
