It’s been 15 years since I had this: when young and poor I drank it all the time as it was the same price as VB and other truly awful beers. Then they priced it alongside decent Euro lagers and I stopped. Anyway: Bottle. Pours gold, modest white head. Some lacing. Mild aroma of malt, hay and citrus. Moderately sweet malts with decent bitterness for the style. Dry, vaguely citric finish with some salt. Still better than other Australian macros and still an OK beer on a hot night.

2015 side-by-side rates: Cascade Stout 5.8, 27.5 ibu Dark brown with only slight red-purple highlights under light. Aroma is chocolatey, slight fruitiness, bit of molasses. Light chocolatey character, demerara dark sugars, just a light fruitiness. 4 7 6 3 14
Cascade Export Stout 5.8 Dark brown with only slight red-purple highlights under light. aroma is chocolatey, fudgey, bit if molasses but not as much fruitiness. Chocolatey but arguably sweeter, earthier, has a fuller body. 4 7 7 4 15
2010 rate: @ Southern Barbarian, Shanghai. Very dark brown colour with a thin head. Chewy, rich, fruity, treacly aroma. Chocolatey palate. Fairly full body. Soft and smooth. Moderate sweetness. Complex fudgey brew. Gets a little bit thin at the end. Pretty good beer that blurs the stout/foreign stout line.

Light yellow. The aroma is appley and maybe with a hint of bread. Bready taste. Light spicy hops - no bad balance for a macro. Sure it’s sweet and bland, but it’s balanced and drinkable.

Good, considering the constraints. It’s 36C, I’m at my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday do, I have to drive the kids home in an approaching thunderstorm on already dangerous New Year’s Eve. This was sitting in an ice slurry and obviously it’s very cold. Pale yellow, almost white head. Some malt and a surprising amount of grassy hops are there on the nose. The body is of course, way too light. But this is only an illusion of beer, and it’s pretty good considering.

Pours dark brown with a head that settles to small and tan. There’s nutty, roasty and chocolate aromas and something kind of unpleasant there too - burnt metal, I suppose. It’s a bit thin but nicely carbonated - a bit hollow-bodied. Slightly chewy mild bitter finish. It’s OK, but I’m again struck by the lack of oomph and ambition from Cascade. [2.7] As Export Stout. Perhaps a little fresher, pleasantly chocolaty aroma with some weedy herbs and chicory. Choc and nuts, bitterness is balancing, some metal. OK. [2.8] And again, colder. Chocolate, some licorice, weeds. Yeah, OK.

375ml bottle. Pours pale gold, two fingers of white head. Aroma is of mild sweet malts. Medium bodied and quite bubblegum sweet. A little skunky at the end. There’s not that much wrong with this, it’s just dull. I seem to recall this being quite a bit better, but there you go.

2009 bottle. This has settled down into a pretty consistent beer after what my memory says was a poor start. There’s a big aromatic grassy/ citric kick from the fresh hops but the malt is bland. There’s plenty of bitterness but not a lot else. A shame - they could have made something rather rambunctious with these hops but baulked. [2.8]2011 bottle. Amber with a large white head. Aroma of mild caramel, grass/ weeds and a little citrus. Taste has fairly bland malt, decent bitterness with a rather weedy character. Some leaf and resin. This years is pretty rough and again, not that flash.

Toffee/amber pour with a reasonable head that faded quickly.Aroma consists of grainy malt, a bit of floral hops and a hint of resin. Some slight metallic notes in the background. Pretty light on.Flavours are similar with caramel and resinous sweetness. Some treacle. Reasonable strong bitterness but unfortunately its quite boring and metallic.Too watery.

Straw, with small head that reminds me of the scum on top of a swamp. How can a head look this bad??Aroma is skunk, sewer, stagnant water. Some faint sweet malt upon tasting, cooked vegies, and 1 dimensional short-lived bitterness.Very high carbonation.
