Blended sour ale, similar to the 2020 version but with different proportions of top-fermented saison with 'wild' beer (70/30 in the 2020 version, 80/20 in the 2021 version), by this French craft brewer located near Montpellier in southern France. Thin, loose and open, snow white, moussy head on a misty pale yellow-golden beer. Aroma of ripe pineapple, sugared tea, Doyenné pear, brioche bread, sweet cicely or anise, yoghurt, sulfuric touch in the background. Tart, fruity onset, green pear and pineapple esters, minerally carb, supple cereally and sweet-bready maltiness softly edged by a tart lactic dryness, evoking green apple and unripe pear impressions, next to this gentle but noticeable anise- and ‘drop’-like herbal aspect. Mild herbal hops, remaining very soft in bitterness so that its refreshing, mild, gentle character is maintained till the last drop. Clever and elegant beer, not overspiced like I was fearing but instead kept well in balance.

Blue grape beer by this young microbrewery in the Montpellier region in southern France, with snow white, medium sized, moussy and opening to dissolving head atop a misty vermillion red robe with deep wine red glow. Aroma of blue grape skin rather than actual grape flesh, dry red wine (quite dominant even), rosehip tea, wine leaves, yoghurt, rosé, minerals. Crisp, fizzy onset, rather sharply carbonated for this kind of beer perhaps, red-fruity with again grape skin rather than sweet fleshy grape, impressions of red apple peel and redcurrant as well; supple, somewhat vinous mouthfeel, slender cereally malt core under strong grape skin tannins and eventually still some red wine juiciness, paired with a notable herbal aroma (rosehip tea, bergamot even). Low in hop bitterness, but the tannins from the grape skins provide enough dryness; I just wish there had been some more juicy and fleshy grape prominence here, but generally this is a very tasty grape ale – and as I argued before here, I still find it bizarre that the French do not experiment a lot more with their wine heritage when it comes to craft brewing (see Italy)… Imagine what the possibilities could be!

Flaska från Etre. Aningen disig ljusgul vätska med medelhögt vitt skum. Lätt, krispig och frisk. Doft och smak av jäst, örter, säd, mineraler och hö. Drickvänlig och välgjord. En stil som passar som lågalkoholöl. Gott

Clear ruby red beer, small creamy light pink head, unstable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: cow stable, bar yard, very rural impression here, a little floral, soapy touch. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: apple cider, a bit sourish, dry, some tannins, a gentle bitterness with a fruity touch, more sour apples. Aftertaste: dry finish, a bit spicy, some tannins, slightly sweet, fruity, pretty decent.

Un grand merci à Vincent pour cette découverte. Sur le papier, une saison de seigle avec macération de Syrah et un vieillissement 11 mois en fut de chêne, c'était plutôt sympathique. Côté réalisation je ne retrouve malheureusement pas l'expression du Syrah, qui est un cépage que j'affectionne particulièrement, l'acidité est trop marquée et de fait on ne retrouve pas l'expression d'une saison et le vieillissement en fût n'est pas des plus aboutis avec une aigreur dérangeante. Le visuel est sur un joli rosé avec une fine effervescence sans mousse. Le nez sur le vinaigre de vin, le raisin avec un léger chêne n'est pas spécialement pour me plaire. En bouche, l'ensemble reste très acide, on ne ressent de fait pas l'esprit d'une saison. On ne reconnait pas non plus le côté puissant et épicé du Syrah. La bière possède cependant un côté vineux marqué et intéressant. Il n'est pas certain non plus que le vieillissement en fût soit pertinent, et j'aurais préféré la même sans vieillissement en fut. L'attaque est légèrement acidulée mais avec un sucre un peu trop poussé. Les arômes sont sur le raisin, le vinaigre de vin, la framboise et le chêne. Ce dernier amène d'ailleurs une aigreur trop marquée. L'acidité est dès lors un peu plus marquée avec une légère astringence. L'alcool, à 8 % fait globalement le job. L'acidité se renforce encore d'un trait en arrière-bouche ce qui donne de l'allant par rapport à la base douce, mais des arômes de vinaigre trop présents alliée à une aigreur marquée (cette dernière provenant du vieillissement en fut). On retrouve notamment cette aigreur dans le final qui est cependant plus équilibré sur l'acidité. Trop d'acidité.

Bottle from unknown. Hazy black, small, foamy, beige head. Aroma of blackcurrant, brambleberry, forest fruit jam, black tea leaves, tobacco, toasted sourdough bread. Taste has sour blackcurrant & pomegrenate on a sourdough-malty base, lactic feel yet somewhat infected too. Herbal hoppy finish, toasty, touch of coffee and black tea, lingering berries. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Interesting beer, but not very enjoyable to drink.
