Description
It all started with a humble homebrew kit and the drive to make better beer. Tired of the same bland and dated choices everywhere, Air Force friends Eric Wallace and Dick Doore set out to make the kind of beer that excited them; beer they wanted to drink. A hobby quickly became an obsession and it wasn't long before Left Hand Brewing opened for business on January 22, 1994. Left Hand has steadily increased its production, making the Brewers Association’s Top 50 Craft Brewers list in 2012.

Black with almost no head. I could smell coffee before I poured the beer. Some chocolate in the aroma as well as toast. Flavor is coffee and chocolate, sweet, then a mildly bitter aftertaste. Excellent palate. Very smooth, but also a substantial beer. I could drink a lot of this.

Average sized head that falls away quickly into a medium amber beer. Diminished malt aroma, little from the hops. Flavor is sweet with just a bit of hops to balance. Just another weak Pale Ale.

2005 bottle. Clear orange-amber colored body with a small white head, low retention. Aroma of sticky caramel malt, sweaty hay, a bit of floral hops, but overall, pretty low on hops aroma. Flavor stays with the malty trend, with some lightly spicy hops, a hint of floral notes but mainly just a simple bready-caramel malt flavor. Medium body, forced carbonation. I liked that it wasn’t over-hopped.

Bottle. Copper color with a nice off-white head. Pine resin aroma. Nice resin/earthy/spicey flavor. Not highly bitter. Light bodied. The more you drink, the less impressive it is. It starts out great, but half way through I wasn’t so impressed. A growing mustiness.

Thanks to Matta for this gem! Beautiful clear, deep amber pour that supports a long lasting, sticky head of off-white, that lasts forever. Multi-layered hop and malt aroma. Spicy floral hops with sweet caramel malt and warm bread dough in the back. Well balanced flavor, delivered on a light to medium bodied beer, that carries a long sweet, then bitter finish. Very acceptable IPA. Re-rate 12/07 Scored down 2 pts overall and 1 pt palate. This has gotten thinner and lost character.

A hazy brown beer with a small disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet matly with mainly coffee notes, but also hints of bourbon. The flavor has distinct bourbon character mixed in with the notes of coffee and chocolate while the alcohol burns the tongue. Just a notch better than the standard Imperial Stout.

Brown to dark amber color. The aroma improves a little, with some vanilla touch, light Madeira, showing the roasted malt as the regular. The flavor is essentially caramel and caramel, not complex enough, a bit astringent at the end, too much carbonation, a bit coffeish. Quite good. Thanks Jens (Ungstrup) for sharing this bottle.

Golden amber with a small head. Beerlike aroma with a hint of ginger. Plain, watery with a hint of ginger flavor, but not much.
