Bottle from Drinkmonger. Black body with a massive tan head. Excellent lacing. Wonderful aroma of kiwi fruit, plum, lime, milky coffee and flowers. Flavour of pine needles, tangy grapes and chocolate. Also lightly roasted malt but not as deeply roasted as other Black IPAs I’ve tried. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. A flavoursome, fruity Black IPA. Weird Beard certainly know how to pack their beers full of flavour.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is grassy hop. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a lovely grassy nettle hop, spicy, liqourice palate and a smooth lingering bitter finish. This is a beer packed full of flavour and super refreshing.

Draught @ The Rover. Pours slightly hazy golden with a big frothy and creamy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some soapy looking lacing on the glass. Smell is tiny sour, tiny spicy and phenolic with crackers, lemon juice, white pepper corns, hay, cloves, unripe pears, green apples, unripe plums, dry soil, lemon zest and hints of apricots and lemony soap. Taste is slightly sour, tiny spicy and phenolic with crackers, lemon juice, green grapes, baked pears, cloves, coriander, white pepper corns, dry soil, hay, apple skins, lemon zest, unripe plums, orange zest and hints if schampo. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, slightly tart, tiny spicy astringent and light bodied. Finish is sour and spicy with crackers, lemon juice, cloves, dry soil, wood, unripe pears, green apples, lemon zest, grape skins, coriander and schampo. Phenolic without getting metallic. Tasty without being spectacular.

Cask at Pivni, York. Almost black, with a thick, tight, lasting beige head. Very handsome. Ripe blackberry fruitiness, some roasted coffee and just the right side of hoppy bitterness. Silky on the palate.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a deep brown treacle colour with a huge frothy tan head and lots of carbonation. This was a lively beer! The aroma is surprisingly very yeasty with lots of that Belgian malt which really shines through. The hops are not so evident. The flavour is super strong bitter with a rich malty, liqourice palate and a nice lingering bitter finish. Well worth tracking down. I think the Belgians could learn a thing or two about flavour from this too.
