Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.
Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, a lot of nuts and a touch of toffee. Medium-bodied; Pungent malty flavour with a lot of caramel and chocolate tastes followed by a little bit of cardboardie maltiness and some light earth notes. Aftertaste shows some good consistent flavours of nuts and caramel with a lot of malt and a touch of alcohol noticeable. Overall, a good beer - and since i’ve never seen it for sale here in Washington - good to sample! I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from CommonWealth Gastropub in Columbia Heights, Washington, DC on 05-April-2009.

Cask at the FFTMC beer festival, Oxford, 26.03.11 Pours gold and in sparklingly good nick, much like the other beers had here today. Touch of soapy hop, quite bitter, touch strung out, drying at end, good stuff. Loz preferred this to the Elland, I liked them the other way around. A6 A5 T7 P4 Ov13 3.5

Clear deep golden color, steady white creamy head. Very light and honeyish aroma. Light palate. Flavor is slightly honeyish with light lemony hoppyness. Leading to slightly sweetish and hoppy aftertaste. Boring. (6/2/5/2/9 2.4)
Cask@Kitty’s, Helsinki
Pale amber color, small white head. Piney-apricot fruity aroma. Light palate. Piney hoppy flavor with dry woodyness and grapefruit. Lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Simple but in better condition than one I sampled a year ago. (7/3/7/2/11 3.0)

Cask, Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool. Clear golden looks with a middling white head. Nose had some decent hoppage and citrus fruit. Flavour followed along similar lines with some balancing malts. Dryish gently bitter finish. Easy drinking and plenty of character for a 4 percenter.

Cask at Victoria station, Wetherspoons, London. A golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes of citrus fruit, slight bitterness, hoppy, malty. Decent session ale but I don’t consider this to be a Christmas beer!

On gravity at the Three Tuns, Bristol 4/03/2011. Near black in colour with no head. Sweetish, dark fruit and chocolate aroma with a touch of citrus hop. Roasty coffee flavour with more chocolate and fruit before a dryish finish. Good.
