Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Handpull cask at the Kings Head. Mid- to dark gold, clear with a thin white head. Malty aroma with slightly sour oranges and musty notes. Full bittersweet taste peppered with hop character moving toward a bitter finish. Light-ish body. Not a lot to this one, but competent enough.

Cask at Ebenezers, Nantwich. Pours a hazy (almost cloudy) golden orange with minimal off-white head. Not much of an aroma, just some hints of floral hops. Hops are more to the fore in the mouth, where it is quite bitter with a creamy texture. Citrus comes through quite strongly too, alongside some traces of yeast, caramel and autumn fruits. Finish is dry and slightly bitter. This is OK but a bit nondescript.

Draft at Bottle & Barrel, Aberystwyth. Poured a hazy yellow golden colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, tropical citrus. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a smooth, rich, dank, mineral, light citrus, coconut, floral, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours almost black withathick foamy tan head and good lacing. Roasted malts and chocolate dominate the aroma. Same agin in the mouth where it is smooth and creamy, but here they are joined by some dark fruity notes and hints of coffee and coconut. Some bitterness in the finish. This is excellent !

Cask at Ebenezers. Crewe. Pours golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. Theres oranges and floral hops in the aroma plus a hint of generic citrus. Floral hops to the fore again in the mouth plus autumn fruits and nuts plus some hints of grapefruit. Fluctuates between bitter and sweet leading to a slightly dry finish. This is a decent hoppy bitter.
