Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

440ml can. In honour of Nige who we sadly bid farewell to earlier. Will miss you greatly chief 🍺 This beer is very good haze, super smooth, great harmony of exotic stonefruits with an appealing juicy sweetness.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. There’s dark malts and coffee in the aroma. In the mouth there’s plenty of different flsvour with lactose and vanilla being prominent. Coffee and chocolate are also there in the mix along with traces of dark fruits and roasted malts. Finish is quite sweet and creamy. This is a decent beer but somewhat lacking in actual stout characteristics.

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. Dark gold, clear with a small white head. Taste is sweet and jammy with notes of stone fruit a small off-white head. Fruity and slightly floral scent with notes of apricot and tangerine. Finish has a little bit of bitterness in the back of the tongue, spreading to the entire mouth. Light body with almost no carbonation. Pretty tasty.

440ml can from Anthony's of Wellington: BB 16th April 2026, drank on 29th December 2023 at my parents place in Devon. Black bodied with a tanned head. Malty front to the initial aroma and taste, then the hops kick in with an earthy resinous and citrussy feel. Interesting beer all round.
