Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

Draught Deep clear amber; very good, fine light-beige head, receding. Slightly sourish, fruity nose, hint of Brett (???), perfume which (by association?) reminds me of crème de marrons. Taste has more sourish, besides rosewater and vanilla. Despite the acidity, there is a very high level of sweet. My companion says "cotton candy", retronasal. Every new sip gives vanilla and some other, perfumey herb. Slight slickness, even stickyness. Not my idea of beer, let alone De Koninck. Still - I like the historic name, as well as the idea.

On tap at Paters Vaetje, Antwerp. Chestnut colour with thin beige head. Yeasty aroma, sweet malt in mouth. Some citrus fresh aroma. Good simple amber beer which is very drinkable but not as flavoursome as the cask version in the UK

On tap at Paters Vaetje, Antwerp. Reddy/brown beer with beige head. Served a mite bit too cold. Malty red fruit aroma, some hop. Sweetish toffee in mouth, some yeast on aroma and finish. Drying hop finish. First drink I had after driving round Antwerp for ages looking for my hotel.

Bottle. Best before 10/12/04 - so over a year past that. Dark ruby amber with a nice light beige head. Spicey sweet malt aroma. Clean malt flavor with light spice and some figs - but overall nothing complex and fairly straight forward. Medium-light body.

Draught. Perfumy, soapy, candyish aroma. Dark amber colour, small head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma, perfumy, bubble gum, anis, bonbon. Caramel aftertaste. The alcohol is not very present in the flavour. Not too bad, but weirdly perfumy.

Tap, Deugniet den Bosch. Clear amber color, thick creamy off-white head. Aroma is spicy, cinnamon, sweet amber malt, bubblegum. Slightly sour taste, sweet, cinnamon indeed, bit flowery, some chestnut. Good balance, though quite sweet. I liked it actually.

Bottled. Reddish amber colour with small beigeish head. Aroma of plum, spices and sweet malts. Flavour is strong hoppy with grassy hints. Grassiness goes hay in finish. Also barley comes in quite strong in the form of breadish hints. Pleasant, but a bit too hoppy for my taste.

Bottle: Poured a hazy deep yellow color ale with a huge foamy dirty white head wit pretty good retention. Aroma of Belgian yeast with sweet malt. Taste is quite refreshing with some mild sweet malt and nice dose of Belgian yeast. Medium dry finish with a nice above average body. Very good take on the style.

Bottle: Clear, reddish to amber coloured, thin, slowly vanishing white head; malty, a bit cardboardy nose with some spicy traces (cinnamon ?); quite full, sweetish, fruity flavour (peaches, pears); mild, spicy, sweetish and also a bit hoppy finish; creamy mouthfeel. Not bad, but nothing special...............
