This bottle has at least a couple of years on it. We nearly opened it last winter. Pours brown with light brown edges and thin tan head. The aroma is malty sweet with loads of molasses to go along with earthiness, yeasty spice and curdled grape puree. The taste begins with even smooth dark fruitiness moving into molasses, earthiness, candi sugar and some yeasty spice. Nicely aged and tasting very good.

750ml bottle bought at Delhaize - FoodLions in Belgium. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma of dark fruits and malts. Taste is caramel malty, thick mouthfeel with lingering dark fruits - cherry and prunes - and candi sugar topping the whole for a sweet and yet warming boozy finish. I grew up loving all of the John Martin beers especially their Xmas beer; one that always had a good spot in our fridge.

Bottle at Hilpeä Hauki, Helsinki, on 2008-11-14. Deep amber and clear. Cherry aromas and port wine in nose. Full bodied, sticky and sugary palate with little carbonation. Sweetness, roastedness, nuts, hint of chocolate and some raisin in taste. Sugary aftertaste.

Bottle, pours very dark brown with a thin light tan/off white head. The aroma is pleasant. Honey, dark malt, licorice, and a little bit of alcohol. The mouth starts creamy with a light sweet malt background, that turns slightly bitter with some dark fruit and spice in the finish. Light alcohol burn as it warms. Nice stuff!

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Dark reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dark fruit, raisins, prunes and cherries. Slightly vinous. Malty taste with caramel, dark fruit, cherries, prunes, chocolate and a fairly spicy finish. Above medium body, chewy mouthfeel, fairly sweet. Not really complex, but nice and tasty with a warming alcohol glow at the back. In short: chocolatey, spicy and sweet malt with dried fruits.

Bottle. Creamy off-white excellent fully lasting head. Brown colour. Heavy malty toasted caramellic aroma. Moderate hoppy. Mild toastyed caramellic moderate bitter flavor. Average light bitter finsih. Oily palate. Nice.

A dark amber ale with a thin offwhite head. Apleasant caramel aroma, non-descript. In mouth, a peaty malt, oily mouthfeel, light licorice, not bad but not what I expected. Medium bodied. Bottle at De Bekeerde Suster, Amsterdam, Nov. 2006, 3.90 Euro.

On tap at Cafe Melaan, Mechelen, Belgium.
Ruby mahagony coloured, medium sized creamy pale beige head, fruity vinous nose. Light roasted malt, fruits and alcoholic with mild yeasty and toffee notes. Also notes of berries, sourish discreet alcoholic finish. Very good and pleasant beer.

Bottle @ Beiaard Marie Heinekenplein. Dark brown colour, big tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, molasses, caramel, dark fruits. Flavour is caramel, roasted malts, brown sugar, chocolate and dark fruits. Sugar taste becomes a bit cloying. Overall a nice beer.

Bottle @ Café Gollem. Amber colour, white head. Aroma of caramel, hops and malts. Flavour is dry, caramel, a little metallic, spicy, soft bitter finish. A bit creamy mouthfeel. OK amber.
