sweet malty, lots of coffee and vanilla with some dark chocolate notes. Malty. A touch sweet but never cloying . Nice vanilla finish. Coffee is fairly strong, but for me that worked.

Bottle from Yodobashi Camera in Kyoto. It poured an inky black with an off-white head of foam which dissipated leaving behind decent lacing. The aroma really hits you with the orange but the flavor is of a very bitter roast chocolate. It is fairly well balanced & an interesting take on a chocolate beer. It’s pretty good but I feel it never really completely came together, possibly the orange is added with some kind of extract which detracts from the beer, I think it should be a bit more subtle but then again the bitterness is so pronounced maybe if the orange flavor was subtler it would be overwhelmed. Either way worth trying & I give Sankt Gallen kudos for being inventive!

Bottle from Yodobashi Camera in Kyoto. It poured a dark inky black with a burnt orange-brown head of foam. The aroma was of a bitter roast malt which was matched in the flavor but also had smokey, caramel, toffee & chocolate notes. I love that they list the IBU, hops & OG on the label and was surprised that they use the exact same hops in the Orange Chocolate Stout: EK Goldings, Cascade, Willamette & Nugget. I agree with KyotoLefty, this beer is quite bitter & would probably benefit from some aging to mellow it out...

Not sure this deserves a separate listing on account of a slight rise in alcohol, but anyhow...Draught at Bungalow. Black, tan head. Didn’t look so special. Big roasty, creamy aroma, chocolate, some berries, roasted wood, some hops and coffee. Taste was similar with a very bitter finish from hops and roasted barley. Actually too bitter for me, as happens with their BW when very fresh. I would sit on this a while for better drinkability, but it was nice enough.

On tap at Yellow Ape Craft. A light feeling dark beer that has 6.5% ABV. It is a mild stout with chocolate and vanilla overtones. It isn’t cloying & has a bit of a bitter kick. Quite palatable, I think it would be great with ice cream but recommend drinking it in small amounts unless you like sweet beers! Feb. 3rd Bottle from Yodobashi Camera. I think it has a nice roasted taste, very crisp but the vanilla is a bit too strong. Like it was added using extract. I preferred it on tap. Strangely, after warming up the vanilla melted back into the background... I guess it just goes to show the importance of drinking a beer at the right temperature!

Bottled (thanks Kim!). Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is fruity, catpissy and some some slight grassy notes with mild sweetish notes. Flavour is sweet fruits, caramel, some toffee and mild grassy notes. Quite pleasantly balanced.

Draught at Molto. Ruch amber-orange with lace. Estery nose, sweet orange, peach, grape must. Rich sweet fruity flavor, melon, some banana, grape, orange, honey. Slightly phenolic. Good fruit with a nicely bitter finish. Full and smooth palate. Good stuff, and more approachable than fresh Diablo. Less complex and more phenolic the second time I had it. Why?...was it me?
