Description
Established 1666 - Closed 1989 - Re-established 2010 - Re-named 2022
One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory. We craft an eclectic range of great beer in cask, keg and can at our new brewery in Hackney Wick. Everything we brew, we do with with skill, belief and passion.
The brewery in Hackney Wick was closed in June 2022 but the award-winning recipes are now brewed under contract for the three venues and online sales.
From Thursday 15 September, Truman’s Beer will be known as Big Penny, following the acquisition of the trademark by the management team at the Old Truman Brewery announced earlier this year.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. A pale amber pour with a thin cream head; tropical fruit aroma with some peach and apricot; dry in the mouth with a fresh lively fruity taste; then gently bitter and biscuity with lingering fruit. A really pleasant, fruity beer. Unfortunately I can’t identify what the fruit is. Ideas anyone?

Keg at the London Brewers Market. Pours mostly clear gold, effervescent, with a creamy, white head. Wheat flakes in the nose, light yeasts, lemon peel, citrus zest. Light-medium sweet flavour with more crisp wheat bread, some lemon rind, melon, pithy grapefruit, light line needles. Light bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with a dash of resin, more pale wheat, rindy and zesty citrus. Nice WIPA.

Cask at the Metropolitan (JDW), London. Dull pale amber-gold. Bitter with a little (but not enough) grapefruit, marmalade, biscuit and flowers, and too much dirt. Decently full mouthfeel, but still a grubby-looking and tasting beer that’s rather unbalanced. Unimpressed with this.
