Established in 1882
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Hand pumped at Malto, Riccione, Italy. Pours loaded gold, clear, with very fine white foam. Aroma is weak but nice, of caramel, earthy. Body is slightly thin, with no carbonation. Taste is very moderate in sweetness and with some toasty bitterness. Final is very dry and very thin.

1/2 pint, cask at Crosse Keys. Shared with Finn. Wetherspoon Beer Festival, March 24. Clear copper coloured, remaining beige head blanketing the glass. Rather subdued malt fruity aromas. Caramel-fruity flavours. Bittersweet finish. Soft on the swallow. Fine bodied. Nice. (London, 16.03.2024).

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Clear copper with a thick creamy head. Mild red ale texture and taste, but pleasingly full-bodied.

[Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.] A reddish amber pour with a creamy white head; malty aroma; fruity malt taste; then a dry biscuity finish with a peppery bitterness.

Cask at Bull & Stirrup, Chester. Pours a dark copper with a small cream head. The aroma is malt load with some hints of raisins. In the mouth it is quite bitter with some underlying sweetness and a creamy texture. Traditional hops dominate the flavour along with marmalade, autumn fruits and some spicy hints. Bitterness lasts into the slightly dry finish. This is decent.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Amber with an off-white head. There's a lovely rounded fruitiness to this - blackcurrants and strawberries with a hint of mango. A bit of tea, and a nice balance between the sweet malts and a well-judged bitterness in the finish. This is really good, who knew Brains had it in them?

Cask up the White Lady. It's been a long day. More rates in the backlog to upload tomorrow. But this pint presents itself as a clear almost chestnut with a proud cap of off-white foam. Aromas of light caramel and hazelnut. Taste is more of the same. Thin finish. Looked promising, but didn't really deliver.

Cask handpull at Crosse Keys Gracechurch Street. Clear mid brown colour. Some sweetness. Some red fruit. Some bitterness. Some sweetness. Strawberry jam beer edge to it that is quite attractive. Decent.
