Description
At Brains we are proud to be Welsh & proud that we remain family owned.

Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

From cask. Clear and golden with a small white and slight fizzy head. Butterish and dry acidic note in the aroma. Flavour holds the same diacetyl with a light acidic touch. Smooth hoppy and mild citric. Totally gone malt profile. Bitter and slight acidic flavoured finish.

Cask @ Bon Accord. Hazy golden colour, tiny head. Malty aroma. Flavour has some hops which gives it a nice bitterness. Ok bitter.

Cask at The Penny Black, JDW Bicester, Oxon . Pours chestnut brown with reddy hue and white head Toffee apples and brambles combine in the mouth with a fruity and dry finish, also quite tangy. It leaves a bitter fruity furriness in the mouth but ts the dryness that’s most telling.

Gravity dispensed cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Dark copper with a thin white head; woodland aroma of damp leafs; woody flavour with a touch of licorice; thin to start, then becoming quite full with an oily sweetness, undercut by an earthy bitterness. Interesting with unusual flavours.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Golden with a decent, but short-lived, white head. Sweet caramel (boiled sweet) aroma, with some floral hops playing second fiddle. Similar sweet malts in the flavour, with some citrus hops and a long dry finish. Good.

(Bottled, ABV 4,1 %, BB 07/2009). Dark brown color, good creamy beige head. Sweet caramelly, a bit metallic aroma. Quite carbonated. Roasted, coffeish, a bit caramelly and milky. Some hops in the aftertaste. Good beer, but overcarbonated. Not sure if this is really "bottle conditioned".

[on tap at Ferryboat Inn, Fishguard] Nice deep gold with a large, smooth white head. Too fizzy by half. Honey dominates with some dusty hay and a slight sourness. Not bad for a pale lager.

[Nitrokeg at BarFive, Fishguard] Smooth & creamy almost to the point of being cloying. But with a decent amount of fruity malt, it’s nicely drinkable. Not bad at all for a nitrokegged bitter.
