Description
The Rothaus Brewery was founded 1791 through the Benedictine monastery St. Blasien in the “Zum Rothen Haus” inn (“To the Red House” in English). Following the secularizations of 1806, the Rothaus Brewery fell out of the hands of the monks and became property of the Grand Duchy of Baden and was renamed the “Großherzogliche Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus” (Grand Ducal State Brewery Rothaus of Baden). The November Revolution of 1918, which led to the abolition of the monarchy in Baden, caused the company to shorten their name to Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus (State-owned brewery of Baden), as from then on the brewery was owned by the federal state of Baden.
Since 1922, the company has had the legal form of a stock corporation, the shares of which are currently held entirely by the associated company of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The continuously large demand for Rothaus beer has in the past made large investments necessary. This allowed the Rothaus Brewery to grow into one of the most modern facilities in Germany.

31/VII/2012 - 33cl bottle from Aktivmarkt (Ramstein) @ hotel room (Ladenburg) - BB: 27/XII/12 - (2012-798)
Cloudy yellow beige beer, small creamy white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: mushy banana, bit bready, sour grains, touch of wood. MF: too much carbon, light to medium body. Taste: very sour start, both from the carbon and from the wheat, I guess. Lemon juice, some sweet grains, bit of green banana. Aftertaste: sourish, lemony, more banana, some grains, citric hops. Tastes more refreshing than most Hefe's, but because of that, it's less like a Hefe.

Bottled. Deep golden colour, with a small foamy white head. Aroma is grassy, sweet maltyness with mild grains and some herbal notes. Flavour is quite muh the same in a quite nice balance. Also some mild saltwatery notes in the finish as well.

Taken on 16 Apr 2011 in the ’Swarzwalderstube’ Berlin. Once I’d stopped stroking the glass I noticed the beer was a murky dull orange colour, on top sat a pure white head, soon to be a wispy covering as the bubbles died away very quickly. The smell was of vanilla pods, corriander and cloves, banana esters also in the mixture of aromas. The taste was of peppery banana, along with the vanilla picked up in the smells. An OK beer, but I thought a little thin in body depth and lacking in flavour compared to many other Hefeweizen biers I’ve had and reviewed.

Pint, poured into a huge, tall Rothaus handled glass at The Cask Pub and Kitchen, London in Oct 2011. This is one of the best Pilsners on the market (also known as Tannenzäpfle when in small bottles), crisp, sharp and refreshing it really does hit the spot if you are wanting something to brighten up your drinking day. Not sure what sets it apart from other German Pilsners, I’ve had enough over the years: it’s just the whole package I suppose, nothing spectacular or really different about it, it’s just right on all counts when talking about this style of beer. The head does stay longer than most of its competitors, but other than that I can’t put my finger on why it should be put on a pedestal above the rest
