Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

Cast at The Smithfield, Derby, at the ’Smithfest’ - (pub beer festival) 08-09-07 According to the Durham website, this had previously been discontinued because of a lack of interest in cask stouts. Glad that this beer has made a re-appearance because I rather enjoyed it. Poured black with small head, typical roasted notes that one might expect, very tasty and full flavoured if a bit cloying at times, enjoyable but I would imagine one would be plenty.

Cask at The Flowerpot, Derby, 08-09-07 Poured light golden with a light, fresh, zesty aroma. A zippy, pithy, fresh beer that was slightly dry in the taste. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.7 Had this again on Cask, handpump at the Cask & Kitchen, Pimlico, London 07.01.12 in company of Loz, Lynn, Barry, Nick & Anna Pours light gold with a white head. I found this a little thin and not really what I would expect from Durham, thugh to be fair having been drinking at Kernel and Brewdog today maybe this was being a little unfairly judged along such hoppy beasts? However I found that this really lacked a distinct hoppiness and bitternes, it was fresh and the finish was dry but the midle was rather plodding and therefore I had to re-rate and alter my opinion of this.
