Description
The Brasserie d'Ecaussinnes was founded in 1999 by the Bruges couple Isabel & Hugues van Poucke. In 2012 the Chinese importer Xiaoning Yu bought the Brasserie d'Ecaussinnes from the Van Poucke's. Together with his friend and beer aficionado Michel Simon, he decided to invest in the former Brasserie d’Ecaussinnes. Substantive work was done to update the production and refresh the image of the brewery. In 2014, the introduction of a new team gave a young and modern dynamic to the brewery and the name was changed into Brasserie Scåssenes. In 2015, the brewery launched its own revolution….the 1830.

In 2020 after years of setbacks (the existing installations of the brewery turned out to be too old or too large; while co-investor Michel Simon left the firm) a new manager was appointed to put things in order. Brewmaster Jerôme, a medical biologist, keeps an eye on the fully automated brewing process.

(Draught) very dark, hazy chestnut; yellow-creamy head, very lacey. Faint smokey nose on top of obviously very sweet (molasses, liquorice). Very sweet taste, molasses and dark candi sugar - even soem "Traubenzucker". At the same time chocolate and coloured swet malts. Finish is surprisingly dry, aromatic in the way of a triple. Full-bodied, warming; "eating and drinking at the same time. Excellent balance. Ultra brune has always been my favourite from this Flemish Walloon brewer. It still is.

(Draught) Fully hazy dark brown; small rim of darkish foam. Faint piney smell, bit of old hops. Very spicey (cinnamon)taste, sweet and fruity. Bit wheat-like, very aromatic. Well-bodied, warming. Nice spicey beer, supposed to be mulled. I wouldn't be surprised if it would improve. I wonder how different it is from de Noël brune (0.5 ABV)?

Brown with amber shine, faint haze; very thick, creamy & uneven head, yellow-brown. "Beery" (as in spilt -) nose, molasses, seaweed & spices. Quite sweet taste, fruity and perfumed with cinnamon, cloves, cardamoms, but with a lot of burnt malts as well. Full bodied, even chewy. Long spicey aftertaste. Very sweet, very perfumed; slightly "overdone"...

White head, fast gone; completely light-gold, clear. Nose of gingerbread and alcohol. Cinnamon, allspice, ginger, "Lierse Vlaaikens" (=Belgian regional spiced patisserie speciality). Sweet taste, gingerbread, cinnamon². Unbelievable flavours, but "slightly over the top". Light mouthfeel, but all the same well-bodied. It's over the top, but in an enthusiastic way -bit like liquid speculoos. Not really bad, neither - ought to be tried.

Dark amber - brown color; thin persistent collar of foam; beautiful lace, sticky.
Pleasant nose of malt, liquorice, roasted malt; delicate, a touch of alcohol; nuts; spicy.
Good body strength, much equilibrated, with the correct balance of malt, hop, sweetness, bitterness, well hiding the alcohol content; Fudge, caramel; smooth.
Not original, but really a solid one.

Beautiful amber color; giant creamy head; fine perlage, plentiful; beautiful lace.
Nice malt aroma, slightly fruity, honey.
Good body strngth, malty, well balanced, with a nice aromatic final. Just a light note of medicine, quickly disappearing; spicy.
Not original, but really a solid one.

Brownish red. Sweet, almost bizarre jelly/raspberry aroma. Acidic, balsamic, yet sweet candy flavour. Sweet raspberry flavour. A complex and very unusual beer, nice to drink small amounts of.
