Founded in 1983 by Ken Brooker, the Scottish brewery has grown steadily to become renowned for their award winning beers. Head brewer, Stuart Cail, joined Harviestoun in 1995. Over the years the brewery has found new and innovative ways to create truly unique beers from their whisky cask aged Old Engine Oil to Bitter and Twisted, aged in Gin and Pinot Noir barrels.

Can from Beer 52. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma starts off as roasted malts, but then gets taken over by raspberries. Pretty much the same thing happens in the mouth. So far, so good. But then bitter coffee grounds come through and clash totally with the raspberries. Not a successful combination in my book.

Svart med beige skum som henger i glassveggen. Lukter sjokolade, kaffe og trevirke. Smaker kaffe og kan kjenne noe whiskey og noe røk. Litt tynn.

330ml bottle. Soft, earthy and malty with some toffee, caramel, oak, whisky and syrup. Decent.
Pitch black, tiny bit of coarse white head. Nose has some peat. Thin, pretty light, sweet, some licorice root, peaty whisky, caramel malts. A bit of a letdown but not bad.

Bottle from Whisky Exchange. It pours black with a decent tan cap. The aroma is rich roasted malt, dark chocolate, rocky road, light vanilla, toasted marshmallow, dull peat reek, ashy bonfire smoke, coffee grounds, damp oak, fudge, fruit cake, smokey whisky and toffee crisp. The taste is dry, roasted malt, bitter - sweet, umami, charred oak, earthy, dull smoke, coffee grounds, some pleasing alcohol warmth, fudgey, toffee, cacao, dark chocolate, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, prune, fruit cake, baked goods, liquorice root, splash of cola and good times. Medium+ carbonation and moderate carbonation. Plenty of depth to it. I appreciate some might want more body to this kind of thing, but works well as is in my opinion. Fun stuff.

[33cl can from Beer52.] An opaque glossy black pour with a tight pale tan head; aroma of raspberry and chocolate; smooth and oily in the mouth with nicely roasted chocolate malts and some tart raspberry; then a lasting biscuity finish with burnt grains and more raspberry. Nicely balanced.
Black with offwhite head. Sweet deep roasted chocolate malts, charcoal, licorice, leathery, fruity, figgs. Some grainy boozy whisky. Classy classic balanced ba impy.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Black with tan head. Earthy, leathery, licorice, soft chocolate, mellow whisky, dry wood, a touch of vanilla, plums, raisins, light smoky. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with a bit dry finish. Really nice barrel aging, lovely!
