Description
About Mjøderiet:

Behind Mjøderiet stands five firefighters from Bergen with a passion for mead - an ancient cultural drink that has only in the last few years begun to return to Nordic palates.

With backgrounds as home brewers and beer enthusiasts at various levels, we at Mjøderiet have ambitions to revitalize mead in Norway. We believe Norwegians are ready to take part in the international development where mead has made a comeback in several countries. We think mead is insanely exciting and is a drink with great potential.

Mjøderiet wants to spread knowledge about mead, revive the classic styles and experiment with new and exciting flavors. We want to have a foot in the old mead tradition and one in the new craft brewery culture, where we experiment with fruits and spices, different alcoholic strengths and different levels of carbonic acid.

The meeting room will have diversity.
We want quality, and genuine passion for precious drops.
For painstakingly collected honey from diligent bees. For real fruits and berries, for flavorful herbs and spices. And of course for exciting and unique flavor combinations.

We want to meet the people.

05.06.2017, a half-full 0,5l bottle (tapped from a keg 3 days ago) @ home, courtesy of ClubGonzo:
No head due to the situation, it’s supposed to be medium carbonated, hazy yellow-ish color. Aroma is slightly dry sour-ish floral, weeds, minerals, sap, sour grass, honey, herbs, hay, fresh wood, sawdust. Taste is dry sour-ish mineraly, sorrel, minerals, unripe berries, hay, flowers, grass, citrus acid, fruit salt, herbs. Medium bitterness, dry sour-ish mouthfeel. Even though it’s not supposed to be like this (the keg has gone sour), it’s actually kind of nice and interesting as it is. Hopefully they can manage to recreate this on purpose sometime, I wouldn’t mind having more of this in the summer sun...

16.05.2017, tap @ Apollon:
Small slightly fizzy-creamy shortlasting head, clear light reddish color. Aroma is slightly sweet mineraly, honey, toast, hay, grass, minerals, dark sugar, hints of red berries. Taste is slightly sweet mineraly, honey, minerals, toast, hay, dark sugar, grass, hints of red berries. Slightly watery and mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough. Easy drinking, but a bit boring. Add loads of cherries, then maybe...

Bottle, at Både&. It pours a deep reddish body, lightly unclear in the glass. The aroma has passionfruit, a generic forest berries scent, some alcohol and a light honey touch. Didn’t detect any of the cherries, but I guess the blueberry/blackberry scent is caused by the cherries. There’s a light herbal or spiced hint in the flavor, with blackberry notes, honey, some warming alcohol and a good dash of passionfruit. Sweet and full-bodied, with a lasting finish. More like a cocktail than anything else this one, but really delicious. 170429

Bottle, at Både&. A still, clear, dark golden colored mead with a sweetish, spiced aroma. Cardamom, cloves, camphor and orange zest spring to mind. It’s sweet on the palate, with a light acidity and honey as a base flavor. The same spices found in the aroma is present, and there’s more orange zest. It’s full-bodied, warming and with a lasting sweet and spiced finish. A bit heavy on the orange I think, it feels a bit artificial in a way, but a small glass is nice. And I guess that’s the way it’s intended to be drunk. 170429

Bottle, at Både&. A still, unclear, orange-colored med with no head. Honey, fruity acidity, some alcohol and a light herbal, forest-ish touch in the aroma. It’s fruity acidic and honey tasting on the palate, warming, full-bodied and close to flat, with a lasting acidic finish reminiscent of sea buckthorn. According to the representative from Mjøderiet, this one shouldn’t be very acidic, so obviously something went wrong. Still, although a bit too dry and acidic, it’s a fine mead. Looking forward to having this againg in good shape. 170429

On tap at Både&. A lightly hazy one, golden-orange in color, almost no head. Lots of passionfruit on the nose, with a very light honey touch in the back. Even some very faint grass notes. There’s a tad more grass in the mouth, still it’s just a vague hint, with loads of passion fruit flavor and a pleasant honey flavor in the back. It’s quite dry on the palate, with a nice fruity acidity and a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting fruity finish. A fantastic fruit mead, had several glasses of this. It’s sort of like a juice, sodapop, lemonade and a longdrink in the same glass. The honey is there just to balance the acidity and refreshing qualities of the mead. 170429
