Description
In the beginning, in 2004, the Lupulus brewery was built to brew beers for the tavern next door. In 2007, the brewery decided to create a new beer, in kegs and in Champagne bottles. The brewers wanted to offer a traditional beer with its own unique flavour, using modern equipment. The region where the brewery is based gave the brewers the inspiration they were looking for. The brewery is housed in a magnificent old 19th century farm, a part of Ardennes heritage. The installation is based in the middle of surrounding green fields, beside a freshwater stream. The historical record is sketchy, but we know that wolves populated the Ardennes landscape in olden times. Some say that these wolf-packs came from Slovenia, where the best hops in the world are cultivated... True story? In any case, the wolf was behind the creation of a new beer: Lupulus. The name derives from the Latin name of the hop plant Humulus Lupulus, which means Small Humble Wolf.

Fles thuis geprobeerd. Het is een diep donkerbruin bier met een volle schuimkraag. Het heeft een fruitige geur met tonen van rozijnen. De smaak is vol, gedroogd fruit en chocolade.

Bottle 33cl. from my 'cellar' bought 181221 from Beergium, @home poured into a tulip glass. Deep dark brown colour, good beige to tannish head, good retention, good lacing. Complex aroma, roasted malts, dark caramel, dried dark fruits, cocoa powder, coffee, liquorice, spicy notes. Taste medium sweet and below medium bitter, roasted malts, dark fruits, toffee, liquorice, spicy notes, touch of umami (!), alcohol notes. Full-bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, long sweetbitter aftertaste, fruity backbone, roasty notes, complex and elegant brew, excellent, like the label says – despite being misspelled – just fabulus!

Can from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Hazy yellow, thin, white head. Aroma of pineapple, tangerine, peach, lime, fresh shallot, dough. Taste has sweet peach & pineapple, sourish citrus zest, bit doughy-bready. Floral hoppy finish with citrus peel, zest and juicy yellow fruit. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Enjoyable, not too bitter but nicely juicy.

Dark, slightly reddish pour with aromas of chocolate and red berries, Taste is complex with hocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, rye, roasted coffee, hints of berries. A pleasant aftertaste, slightly bitter with hints of berries and whisky-like finish. Good to enjoy on a winter evening - take your time for it.

Can from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Hazy orange, thin, white head. Aroma of orange juice, pineapple, tangerine, lychee, honey, biscuit, vague banana. Taste has sweet orange, pineapple & banana in a honey-malty body with some bitter pine. Floral hoppy finish, tad piney again, tropical and sweetish. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. On the sweet side still but it's cool to see a brewery like Lupulus trying out this style.
