Amber ale by Lupulus, deep in the Ardennes and evolved from the (to me much more exciting) Trois Fourquets brewery, originally a side project of Achouffe, in a sense. Very thick, rocky, foamy, off-white, densely creamy head towering inches thick over an initially clear, very purely amber coloured beer with ruddy-orange hue, turning a tad more 'rusty' and misty when the sediment is added. Aroma of roasted peanuts, industrial toast, tea bags, iron (probably from head stabilizer in this case - as confirmed by the old 'hand test'), nutmeg, dried apple slices, walnut skin, hard caramel without the sweetness, brown soap, rosehip, dust. Crisp, clean onset, lots of minerally carbonation, low in sweetness and even lower in fruitiness (some dried apple and persimmon perhaps but very volatile); peanutty, hard-caramelly and toasty maltiness, a very pure 'amber' malt profile indeed, dryish and mildly bitterish, with this bitter aspect enhanced by hops in the finish, taking on a leafy, slightly spicy character; something metallic 'zings' along too, accompanied by a vague spicy aspect (nutmeg). The hops have a consistently bittering effect, matching the overall -relative - dryness of this beer. Clean, rounded, malt-forward amber beer, in all - clean enough to resemble a German Märzen, but in essence, and in spite of its 'modern' intentions (implicitly pointing at American style amber ale), this is a stronger version of the old 'spéciale belge', a genre of 20th-century Belgian amber beer threatened with extinction these days. Too metallic, 'pumped up' in its head formation and retention and probably not very interesting for either the traditional Belgian beer drinker who has long forgotten spéciale belge or the postmodern craft beer hipster for whom this beer would be incomprehensibly unexciting, but I think there have been worse attempts at bringing the old Belgian amber beer style back to life recently.

Last one from reserves... Smell- weak to medium, malt, caramel, Belgian yeast. Foam- malt, Belgian yeast, caramel, bitter tones. Head is large, medium-dark brown color. Appearance - generic dark blue bottle cap, somewhat simple label, but I like it. Clear, dark ruby color. From - pint Taste - malty, Belgian yeast, caramel, weak hops, weak bitter tones, bit herbal. Overall OK Belgian.

Ce qui est plaisant sur cette Lupulus Blanche, c'est que nous ne sommes pas sur une Blanche stéréotypés comme peuvent l'être beaucoup de Blanche intégrant coriandre et écorce d'orange dans leur recette. Et même si j'aurais aimé un peu plus de présence et de caractère, cette Lupulus Blanche est très agréable et se laisse boire facilement par chaleur. Le visuel est sur un blond limpide (EBC de 4), une effervescence moyenne et une mousse blanche nappant la surface. Le nez est bien équilibré où les épices viennent réhausser finement la bière sans devenir grossier. On reste toutefois classique dans les arômes avec céréales, citron, écorce d'orange et coriandre. On retrouve ce même équilibre et cette même élégance en bouche avec des épices très bien dosées et une légère acidité donnant un peu de pep's à l'ensemble. Le titrage alcoolique, à 4,5 % est cependant trop court pour donner de la vivacité et du caractère à l'ensemble. La corpulence est également un peu limitée, mais le final, d'une bonne longueur compense en partie. Pas de réelles fausses notes donc pour une blanche appréciable mais limitée par son alcool.
