Pours golden to straw with a hint of haze and weak white head. The aroma is mild with candy apples, malt sweetness and a dash of lemon. The taste is much like the nose with malt sweetness mixed with candied apples and lemon. But now a nice floral hop flavor and a touch of bitterness intertwine with the other notes creating a pleasing array of flavors.

Dark brown colour is nice, but it’s flat-looking, with no head. Nutty aroma with some chocolate malts. Moderate body, some nutty, slightly earthy character. Perhaps a shade of tartness. Low hopping. Sweetish finish, again leaning towards nutty with chocolate accents. I’d call it a middlin’ brown.

On tap @ Cato’s in Oakland (late Dec. 2007). Pours clear brown with fairly weak head. The aroma was full of sweet raspberry fruitiness that seemed too sweet smelling to be actual fruit but likely syrup. The taste mildly supported the raspberry syrupiness noted in the nose but the flesh of the raspberry seems noticeable here too. There was also a mild malt roastiness hidden behind the fruit.

Bottle. Spicy fruit aroma. Cloudy dark copper colour. Small tan head. Good mouthfeel. Very nice hop flavour, spicy and fruity. Also creamy with a hint of apricot. Good, cleansing bitterness. Quite good beer and very well-balanced.

Bottle: Pours a deep mahoghany color with a small beige head. Light bits of lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty, hints of fresh raspberries. Flavor is relatively fruit-free, only slight hints of raspberry. More nutty and caramel malts. Very little bitters in the trailer. An underperformer.

Poured from the growler a slightly hazy yet transparent amber, brown with a frothy white head. Smells great, citrus, pine, soap, hops with floral hints and malt. Flavor is sour citrus, bitterness of lemons and touches of orange, grass, sticky fruits and sugary malt. Finish is medium bodied, slightly fruity with a mild lasting bitterness that didn’t overpower any of the foods I ate (big Xmas dinner). Good but not great, probably a little too simple and straight forward to make it an elite.

Light caramel malt aroma. Darkish amber color with a bubbly beige head. Medium bodied with slightly fizzy carbonation. Starts sweetish, seeming accompanied by floral/herbal hop. It is definitely fruity. The finish is a bit harshly roasted malt, with a balancing amount of floral/veg bitter. Bitter tends to build, so it’s quite good.

On tap at the Trivia Pub in Moon. Not much aroma and what I mean is that it is much less on the nose than most aggressive IPA olfactories. It’s probably because the big rocky head is covering up the juice and keepin the smell inside. On the palate, it is pretty flat with just a touch of carbonation. The taste is medium grapefruit rind and hop preservative. A little more mild than most IPA I’ve tasted. Even so, has a lingering bitter medicinal finish.

Draught at Lucky Baldwins, Pasadena, California. Near black, minimal head. Aroma of raspberries and cocoa. Medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Dark chocolate, cocoa powder and raspberries dominates the clean flavour profile. Salty finish with some healthy bitterness.
