Description

Commissioned strong blond for Vanuxeem, in existence since 1992 but renamed ’Triple’ in 2009 when the regular blond was introduced. Deep ’old gold’ colour, clear, thin snow white head; strange aroma, solvents, sugary sweetishness, cider, alcohol. Same in the taste: sweet to a somewhat cloying extent, chemical, metallic, fruity with somewhat cloying and also a rather wry, phenolic finish. I hope this has improved meanwhile, because the sample I tasted (at Bierweekend Middelkerke many years ago) was downright unpleasant.

The original Queue de Charrue, since 1986, so the first of a series of beers commissioned by Vanuxeem. Bronze brown beer with thin head and a somewhat weird aroma combining caramelly sweetness with a kind of fruity tartness, metallic hints and something chemical; taste has cloying, candi-like sweetness along with sourness and nutty maltiness, rather thin. Disappointing, certainly for an oud bruin.

Typical ’spéciale belge’ commissioned by Vanuxeem, with moussy, thick, yellowish white head and coppery amber colour, clear. Aroma of unripe peach, walnuts, almonds, caramel, leather, some DMS. Neutral onset with sharpish carbo, dried fruits, orange peel, lightly nutty and caramelly maltiness, all quite restrained, mild and brief grassy hop bitterishness in the finish. Thin and rather bland.

Draught @ Le Trappiste, Brugge. Pours clear golden with airy white head. Clear aroma of fruit and flowers, with notes of malt. Bitter onset (why??), leading to sweet notes of fruit and caramel malt. Rather dry finish, with some sweetish notes towards the very end. Quite out of balance. Drinkable, though.

330mL bottle. Pours a yellow gold, frothy billowy white head, no lacing. Aroma of bread, hay, freshly cut grass, some barnyard qualities, same in the flavor. Finish is short and leaves a bland, old bubblegum flavor.

Decent Vlaams Oud Bruin beer. Sourrish, with a taste of oaky malt. Always a nice style.
