bottle at brewtopia - I was expecting great things from this beer, but was a bit disappointed - quite barleywineish, in fact, I don’t detect a lot of belgian characteristics at all - lots of sugar ( a bit cloying actually) - tries hard at being balanced, but doesn’t quite make it - tasty to a point.

Lightlly hazy reddish amber with off-white head. Sweet lemon and raisins aroma, with pinous resinour overtones. Hops come out as beer warm up. Very hoppy and resinous tatse, with lots of malt sweetness in the end. The hops become more complex as the beer warms up. A cross between an IPA and a BW. Good stuff. Thanks to the Cap!

2004 bottle. Dark black/brown color, not highly filtered, translucent it seems. Good charcoal/brown head. Aroma of bitter hops, lots of oily roasted barley and plenty of coffee notes. Flavor is dry, nutty (walnuts, hazlenuts) with a lot of roasted barley. So much so that it takes on a very oily texture. The hops are juicy and bold and add an almost sweetness to this beer. Coffee and hops on the finish, extra dry, medium body, not as watery as many dry stouts. Still, I just dont like the flavor overall, too dry.7/4/6/3/13
Rerate, late 2004 bottleToo much bitterness, moreso than I remember, and moreso than it needs. Dry hazelnut roast coffee, forced carbonation and not enough sweet malt character. Even though it’s a dry stout, a little sweetness is needed to offset the highly bitter, slightly metallic notes in this. Decent body, which it would showcase better if it werent for all of the prickly carbonation. 6/3/5/2/11

Bottle at Brewtopia ’04 American style Barleywine. Deep amber with little head. Malty aroma with detectable presence of higher alcohols. The hop bitterness overpowers the maltiness in the flavor. Somewhat out of balance. This probably would be good to lay aside and re-rate after some aging. Re-rate 12/21/13 Much smoother and the hops were in balance this time to suit my tastes.. The several years in the cellar proved to be good for this one in every way.

Bottle at Brewtopia ’04. Deep golden color with little head. Aroma is malt and spicy orange with no hop aroma as expected for the style. Flavor is heavily spiced, citrusy. Not bad.

Bottle at Brewtopia ’04. Little head above a clear, deep yellow body. Hop aroma is a little much for the style. The flavor is spicy, playing between clove, corriander and orange in the background. O.K., but not hitting the mark dead on. Re-Rate From my cellar. Oily orange.amber with little head. Spicy sweet caramel aroma. The flavors are nicely melded together after cellaring.

Pours a copper out of the bottle. Nice big white head that lasts long after the first sip. Aroma is very piney and earthy. Flavor is of course hoppy! Damn hoppy! I also get some citrus as its rolls over the tounge. Very nice but i can see how some may not like it. Its hopped out the wazoo.

Pours clear copper with a thin-medium off-white/cream head. Aroma is rather light, herbal, and biscuity. The body is as described quite mineraly and the herbal, spicy and somewhat piney/bitter hops play off the water and biscuity malt quite nicely. One of the better bitters I’ve sampled.

Not as good as Fuller’s but still a great Porter. Pours a very dark brown/black with a thick light brown head. Thin, spidery lacing throughout. The aroma is roasty with hops and cocoa. Medium-bodied with a nice blend of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee flavors. The finish is roasty and lightly hopped and lasting. I liked this one.

A person could keep busy just tracking down the anniversary beers from the different craft brewers. This Double IPA is a rich orange/amber color with a medium and creamy off-white head. Nice lacing rings for the whole glass. The aroma is a potent array of hops, citrus and pine. Full body, and despite what the label states the hops are not overboard in any way. Actually the hops are understated at times, and there is a nice citrus and malt balance, making this a tasty treat. The 9% ABV creeps up toward the end of the glass too. The finish is tart hops with a hint of sweet fruit. All in all this is a nicely balanced Imperial IPA that I could enjoy any time.
