Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.
In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.
The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Muddied, hazy brown coloured body with a deep brass and ruby coloured body and absolutely no head or movement at all. Aroma of honey, yeast ,bread, alcohol, raisins, figs, earth, clay and a good amount of scotch - nice and complex in the smell. Medium-bodied; Assertrive prune and raisin sweetness up front with a little earthy bite at the end of malt and a thinnish, metallic twang at the end. Aftertaste is surprisingly simple and one-dimensional with just a deep earthy bitterness noticeable and some very light caramelised sugar flavours - no complexity, no sweetness and no depth. Overall, sort of an enigma where a beer with not a great look leads to an amazing smell, but is followed up by a mildish flavour and then a finish with no character at all - wierd; Decent at best and disappointing for sure. I’m glad I actually purchased this in the USA and didn’t bring it back from Belgium! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 25-April-2014 for US$3,80 sampled at home in Washington on 14-July-2014 a few days before returning to New York.

24/VI/14 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: n/a (2014-665)
Clear dark blond to beige beer, big creamy white head, very stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing. Aroma: pretty spicy, candi sugar, coriander, bit dusty, orange peel, floral notes, banana and yeast. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: grains, sweet malts, citrus, hay, bit spicy, coriander, pretty bitter, floral. Aftertaste: chocolate bitterness, some banana, alcohol, yeast, spicy, dry, bit grassy, alcohol burn, which is weird for this beer, almonds and marzipan on warming up.

Bouteille: Golden, hazy, minimalistic fluffy head, visible carbonation; moderate nose of honey and toasted malt; pretty sweet flavour, medium to full bodied; drier, hoppier and more alcoholic in the slightly lingering finish. O.K., but not too exciting…

Thx! 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Gollem. Dark brown with a huger creamy brown head. Smells very sweet with cocoa, sugar and mocha. Tastes like coca-cola, very sweet with molasses, brown sugar, caramel, sweet spices, dark fruits. Sweet & sticky body. Another sweet Belgian and this one is quite soda-like but enjoyable at least, agreeable, I can live with this, substantial.
