Brouwerij Serafijn

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

21/III/14 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: 15/II/14 (2014-300)

Note: so, the beer has passed it's BB-date. Apparently for this beer, that is not a bad thing! I loved it. Guess I'm a sucker for old beer. :p
Clear dark orange beer, small aery light beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, caramel, dried fruits, bit oxidized, honey. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet malts, caramel, little toast, spicy, some honey, orange peel, little sour. Aftertaste: sweet, dried fruits, bit sour, dry ending. Good balanced and complex beer.

33 cl. bottle sampled @ Gollem. Thx! Pours a hazy orange with a solid white head. Nose is slightly metallic with orange peel, other grains, touch alcohol and herbs. Taste is same faint metallic note, touch other grains, alcoholic caramel, slightly biter, touch grass, old exotic fruits. m/m body. Nothing bad but not entirely there either and dull fare at best that blends in with the others.

33cl Bottle at Tripel, A’dam. Clear amber with a reddish hue, white head. Aroma of confit fruit, raspberry candy, alcohol, esters, sweet malts, marzipan. Flavour is quite sweet, malty, confit fruit, hint of marmalade, candy, sharp glue-ish alcohol, decent malty bitter finish with some caramel and marzipan, something metallic. Medium to full-bodied. Nice beer.

33 cl. bottle sampled @ Kerstbierfestival Essen 2013. Golden with a white head. Nose is sweet pears, heavy on bitter esters mixed with white sugar sweetness. Taste is bitter grains, esters upfront, very bitter herbal, quite a bit of hops. Grainy & sparkling body. so/so, bit dull even if there is nothing per se wrong with it.

33 cl. bottle sampled @ Gollem in Antwerp. Thx! No BBF. Pours an almost clear pale golden with a frothy white head. Nose is huge esters, faint green banana, feels pretty raw & unrefined with light alcohol. Taste is lots of esters, green banana, citrus, white pepper, hay, alcohol is largely covered here, some sparkling water & light minerals as well. Body reminds me a bit of sparkling water. Way better than expected, not bad at all.

Bottle @ home. Dark red brown color, full sized tan head. Smell malts, caramel, slightly leaves. Taste malts, caramel, sweetness. Nothing special to tell but it’s a decent abbey dubbel.

24/VIII/13 - 33cl bottle @ Bierweekend Lambiekstoempers (Alsemberg) - BB: n/a (2013-797) Thanks to T. for sharing today's beers!

Clear blond beer, aery off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. aroma: bit spicy, burnt toast, some citrus, cloves and other spices. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: very spicy, lots of cloves, weird bitterness, bit soapy, bitter. Aftertaste: some orange peel, bitter, spicy, soapy, little peppery. I'm almost a 100% sure there's cloves in this. And too much, for that matter. May I suggest using less?
