Bottle. Blonde. Citric, soft herbal notes in the aroma. Sweetish alcoholic flavor. Thin. Hints of citrus. Grainy. Soft herbal aftertaste. Lacks character and flavor.

An ‘oud bruin’ style beer made in honour of the ‘Guldensporenslag’ of the year 1302, fought in Kortrijk, and that is where I encountered this beer too (at Staminee Boulevard). Thanks Steve! Very thick, frothy and dense, egg-white, stable head on a deep ruddy-bronze, misty robe. Aroma of sour plums, iron, redcurrant, dried passionfruit, sweet sherry, tree leaves, rosehip tea, yoghurt, dusty old wood but lightly so, something cooked chicken-like hinting at onsetting oxidation. Tart, fruity onset, sour plum and passionfruit, sweet in its core but with souring edges, slick caramelly malt body with somewhat metallic side to it (already beginning to oxidize indeed), lightly bready, tart and earthy finish, dried fruits, oxidized malts effect being confirmed, light toasty and herbal bitterness. Clearly kept as accessible and streamlined as classic Rodenbach, this probably was never a very complex and ‘authentic’ oud bruin to begin with; in this older, oxidized form, almost turning metallic and dusty, it has lost even more of its colour. Not very memorable.

Bottle. Color: Drk reddish brown, very light brown head. Aroma: Overripe to rotten apples. Taste: First split-second of a sip seems ok but then strange, bit metallic rotten apple flavours come in. Hints of oak. Moderate to medium sweet and moderate bitter. Average carbonation and medium body. Weird kind of a beer, this style deserves better. What a mess... Hard to drink a whole bottle.

Bottle, many thanks JefVerstraete! Unclear brown color with large eggshell head. Aroma is metallic, leather, wood, ash, chocolate. Taste is the same, a bit aggressive on the metallicness and way too strawy. Acetone, but not too much of it, finish with high foamy carbonation. Not exactly for me, I expected a bit more.

Bottle from LDW, Eke. Dark brown colour, caramel colour foam. Nose of caramel, wood, red wine, berries. Taste is sweet with fruity vinous hints. Not outspoken tart but nice balanced. Good one.
