About
Since 1926, brewing has no longer been a matter of chance at Bénifontaine, but rather is an art which has been passed down from generation to generation. From microbrewery to family business, Castelain Brewery has had a loyal following thanks to its artisanal beers and its respect for tradition. Thoroughness, patience, authenticity: these have been the key words for Castelain bières de garde and seasonal beers since the creation of the brewery.

75cl bottle from Auchan supermarket in Hirson, as my #700 beer from France. F: big, egg-white, good retention. C: orange gold, light hazy. A: rich malty, mellow fruity, orange, caramel, bit woody, wheat touch, bit vinous. T: full malty base, mellow fruity, oak chips, bit orange, vinous touch, bit caramel, medium carbonation, bit more on the sweet side yet ok but ABV is noticeable, not bad, enjoyed.

Transparent light orange (how is it called blonde??), with a couple of fingers of quite dense white head. Good persistence and nice lacing. Aroma is averagely intense and clean, though maybe not super defined: a quite strong sweet malty base, with notes of honey and caramel; fruity notes (pear, a red berries hint, maybe a hint of apple) and light spiciness. Taste notes follow the aroma closely, with good enough intensity and good execution, though again not super defined. Sweet edge in the mouth, with a nicely balanced finish and aftertaste, which shows a light earthy note. Medium body with average carbonation, but a kind of thick carbonation, which made the beer feel a bit heavier than it's 6.4% abv. Good enough, though i was not impressed.

opalescent dark golden colour, medium sized dense off-white head; aroma of fruity, orange zesty, grape peel, slight floral, maybe piney and vegetables notes; bittersweet taste with the same notes as can be felt in the aroma; drinkable, though not really a superb IPA

75cl bottle from Metz - thanks Anke! Clear golden, thin, white head. Aroma of smoked wood, apricot, apple peel, honey, butter, vague chlorine, moist tobacco, mint or chewing gum. Taste has sweetish apple, apricot & banana over a honey-malty base, bit wheaty with spicy notes. Floral hoppy finish, smoked wood, some butter, ripe yellow fruits and warming jenever-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Not bad but really messy.

One of a series of commercial beers from Northern France, designed for a large audience, presented as an “ambrée”, brewed at Castelain and distributed by House of Beer since 2012. Frothy, egg-white, membrane-lacing, stable head on a misty, warm orange-tinged peach blonde beer. Aroma of ripe peach, banana, brioche bread, ripe pear, apricot jam, clove, ‘jenever’, honey. Fizzy carbonation, fruitiness ‘à la’ banana, peach and pear but still remaining clean and low in esters (this is a lager, after all), smooth and bit fluffy body; caramelly edge around a brioche-bready malt sweet core, white candi syrup sweetness, honeyish with mild clove-like phenols. Light floral and grassy hop bitterishness in the end alongside pronounced gin-like alcohol which ought to be better hidden; lingering honeyish sweetness too. Indeed a simple, sweet strong lager, almost like a Belgian style tripel, clearly aimed at the masses that are used to strong Belgian style blondes – but balanced enough to remain relatively enjoyable if there is not much else around.
