Description
The Obergärige Hausbrauerei Uerige (top-fermented craft brewery) is not a museum, but an exceedingly modern food business where a craft rich in centuries of tradition is carried out. It goes without saying that the Reinheitsgebot, or Purity Law dating from 1516, is still adhered to, because its results are good and lasting, relying, as it does, on nature as one of its main factors. Which is exactly what we do, too: our yummy droplet is made of nothing but water, barley, wheat malt, and our Uerige yeast.

As it is named after a freaky former owner of the brewery, it is the most polarising Alt in Düsseldorf. Wonderfull roughly taste, spicy, hoppy and malty at the same time. Many people like it, some hate it. I just love it.

Hazy amber, off-white lacing creamy head. Herbs (juniper) and licorice in the aroma. Smotth blend of roast, mineral notes, and raw herbal hops. Full body, mellow sparkling mouthfeel. Subtle juniper and licorice aftertaste. Thanks to Dortmunder for this speciality!

At the brewpub on Sticke Day. Golden-brown, bubbly head, very hoppy aroma, and lots of malt richness as well. Rich, chewy character, lots of sweet sugary malts with earthy hops. Quite a bit of bitterness, good dry appetizing finish. Definitely a high quality alt.
Original rating, 2005 for an export version. Golden amber colour. Slightly earthy, caramelly aroma. Chewy, woody bitterness with caramel layers and lots of earthiness. Things ease up a bit towards the finish, right when I want the intensity to increase. Sort of ashy-tasting, just like its younger brother. Solid, but unspectacular. 7-4-7-4-15 = 3.7

Bottle dated 25/10. I’m spending my Super Bowl watching time enjoing this and Uerige Alt. Have to say, this may be a bit over-hyped. Pours a foamy head; more settled than the UAlt. The malts are a bit smoother, like this has gotten some good aging in, and the hops have mellowed out, too, with bitterness only showing up in the aftertaste. There is a definite feel of more alcohol than the regular UAlt. I had expected something roasty or smoky, but couldn’t really catch it. May be flatter, or just supposed to me more subtle and mellowed.

Bottle dated 14 April. I’m spending my Super Bowl watching time enjoing this and Uerige Sticke. I find this actually has more character. Pours a rocky head, which remains as chunks of foam on the sides of the glass. Deep copper in color, highly malty and hoppy smell. taste is of caramel malts, then a Super-size dose of German hops. It’s like a German IPA; the biggest smack of hops I’ve in a German beer. It’s a highly entertaining total beer experience.

Copper-orange body with abundant dark suspended sediment, big cream head. Aroma of light fruit, spicy hops, and hints of wet sock. Spicy, crackery, toasty flavor with dried flower petals and potpourri. Caramels develop over time as do abundant yeast flavors. Bitter finish. I had the Sticke Alt on tap earlier this year and think that beer was a bit smoother, but this is enjoyable nonetheless.

Code 0515, Bottled on 14 04 (14.April?)
Cola coloured body with large particles & a medium-sized tan head. Aroma of alcohol, slightly stale malt, caster sugar, cashews and a tiny bit medicinal. Light-bodied; Sharp alcohol/medicinal taste fading to a pale & stale maltiness. Aftertaste bland and not pleasant. Overall, less than I had expected, but a very nice & rare find from Jim Dorsch at Whole Foods. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 14-September-2004.

Yellow beer with pistacchio shine, thick dense yellow-tinted head. Very perfumed, spicey nose; cloves, vanilla, wheat; slowly fading. Sweet, slightly sourish taste, clashing from the start with some roasted taste, probably enhanced by hops. This last is typical Zum Uerige, the first is the Weizenbier characteristics, albeit somewhat drier, less fruitier than the Bavarians (but as to qualify this as American Wheat!?) Some banana retronasal all the same. Sourish tinge makes it appear lighter than it is already. Some slickness, and some spritzyness at the same time. From the first time I tasted this beer, I found it unbalanced: the Uerige housestyle (yeast?) clashing with the Weizen branding. BTW, Josh, it is drunk more these days, I saw. Give me the Alt anytime.

(draught - the real thing) Chestnut brown, clear ale; very regular, slightly off-white head, good lace. Little nose, ever so slightly caramel, a bit of hops - and the dishwashing; poor show at the brewery! Superb hop-taste, absolutely gorgeous German hops. Yet the malt underneath is anything but shy. It’s relevant, ambrée, refined. Medium bodied. Uerige is definitely better bodied than most (regular) Altbiere. Hoppy, straightforward bitterish aftertaste - just great. Uerige Alt will always be one of my favourites. This tasting at the Hausbrauerei once more confirms the idea of the number one.
