Description
On the outskirts of Billund, just a stone's throw from the expansive Jutland heaths, lays Dansk Mjød. A traditional brewery which has brewed mead since 1994 on the basis of old recipes and with an uncompromising focus on quality and ingredients. It is the endless stories and myths about mead, which still inspire Dansk Mjød to create products that combine the ancient brew craft and tradition with a modern eye for quality and tastes.

Another deep golden-amber mead, slightly softer than the Dansk Klap, with similar legs and a high clarity.
For bringing the alcohol down a little over 2%, I definitely was impressed that it seemed significantly more lighter than that (wasnt expecting hardly any change). A little bit more phenolic spiciness comes out, and the alcohol isn’t quite as fierce, with more of a plum-brandy note and not quite the beat you over the head with raisins and thick brown sugar that that Klap had. Still, it wasn’t too far behind, in an absolute sense, and just seemed excessive and overly decadent, to say the least. Thank god for Sunset Grill and their mead flights; I would have been pissed if I bought a bottle of this for $20. Thick, syrupy texture, alcohol is quite problematic.

Glass from the bottle at Sunset Grill on 8/13/07, alongside the Viking Blod, South African Chile and Apis Jadwiga
Deep burnished-copper, still, of course, with huge, viscous legs and a medium-high to high clarity.
Powerful, sweet, port-sherry nose, with raisins, rich honey, almonds, nuts, marzipan, caramel and light prunes all combining to give the typical strong, thick mead experience. There really isn’t even much use in splitting my comments in to aroma and flavor as it’s, more or less, one and the same. It overpowers you with sweetness, not even all that complex, and then just finishes you off with alcohol. I can handle not that complex, but when the alcohol is just rampant, fairly raw and sharp, I just don’t see the point and fail to see how there can be much enjoyment garnered. Compared to this, Apis Jadwiga is a kolsch! I will say it dosent help that my preference tends for dry things, as this is about as sweet a drink as I can imagine. But I can appreciate a port or sherry, I think it’s just the overwhelmingly raisiny-sugary simplicity of this one, with the noxious alcohol, that really kills the experience for me. Syrupy, thick, viscous mouthfeel.

(Bottle) Clear deep golden color. Sweet honey and raissin scent, but also a lot of alcohol. Sweet honey scent. Though the aftertaste is alcohol and it’s quite warming, almost burning in the throat. Apparently they add hard spirits to this to stop the fermentation and keep some of the sweet stuff from the honey. I don’t think I appreciate the amount of alcohol that has been added. Rich mouthfeel.

Bottle (as Gl. Dansk Eng-Mjød, thx to papsoe for sharing) Copper-golden, unclear, oily pour with no head. Alcohol, honey, heather and a little spicyness in the aroma. The flavor is sweet, with honey, flowers, heather and some spices. Full, sweet mouthfeel. Alcohol, sugar and heather in the finish. Quite nice. (070510)

Drank out of a Viking horn in Plan B :) Spicy and flowery aroma. Taste of flowers, honey. Quite alcoholic, even for a Danish mead.
