Bottle shared, black beer, small to no head. Aroma is spices, cloves, allspice. Taste is the same, beer flavour gets overwhelmed by the spices and it gets annoying very fast. Cannot drink even half a glass.

Ergens in de nasmaak iets van kruidnoten, vooral heel kruidig en sterke kruidnagelsmaak. Gekocht bij peppernuts breda.

Barleywine from this Frisian microbrewery (northern Netherlands), bought online. Mousy, yellowish beige, medium thick, slowly breaking and dissipating head on a misty chocolate brown beer with burgundy hue. Aroma of ground and lightly toasted hazelnuts, wet toast, dried cranberries, tea, hard caramel, chicken soup (likely a sign of oxidation but not in the most elegant way), old cookies, chervil, beetroot, raw red cabbage, apple peel. Sweet onset but nowhere sticky, dried fig, cranberries, softishly carbonated with smooth - yet not sufficiently vinous - mouthfeel; walnutty and brown-bready, toasty maltiness, sweet with a strongly developed bittering tail, the latter lightly accentuated by herbal hoppiness reminiscent of thyme and herb tea, while this 'soupy' chervil effect lingers about, accentuating the 'green herb' experience a bit. Warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol in the finish, lingering bittersweet nutty malts and some dried fruit. Too 'soupy', but otherwise certainly not an unpleasant beer; it does, however, much more resemble a Scotch (Belgian style) than a true barleywine for me...

Clear ruby brown, tall creamy beige head, good retention, heavy lacing. Aroma roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, light licorice. Taste medium sweet and bitter, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Medium body, watery to oily texture, average carbonation, short sweetbitter aftertaste, roasty, earthy notes, nice try.
