Description
Life's too short for boring, middle of the road beers. Craft Brewery Kees! stands for tasty, fruity, hoppy flavours and strong dark ales, but there'll always be that 'twist' . That special 'something' that make his beers stand out.

Owner and brewer Kees Bubberman started his brewing career in 2007 at Emelisse, a small regional brewery in Kamperland, Zeeland. Within a couple of years Emelisse became a household name among craft breweries worldwide, thanks to the by British and American beer styles inspired ales, IPA's, strong porters, stouts that Kees Bubberman brewed. Never afraid of trying something new and relying on his experience as a restaurant chef he created more than 30 new beers, including an IPA with Earl Grey tea, barrel aged porters en stouts and strong porters and stouts with coffee. Kees was ahead of his time with experimental flavours like these.

In 2014 Kees Bubberman decided to start his own brewery in his hometown Middelburg. Thankful for the opportunities Emelisse gave him, he felt that it was time to go his own way. Brewery Kees! started in January 2015 and within a year his delicious IPA's, strong porters, Russian Imperial stouts and barrel aged barley wines, porters en stouts found their way in the (beer-)world.

Kees keeps on creating new beers and searching for new tastes, sometimes following and sometimes setting trends.

Sampled @ Borefts 2015. Opaque black color, medium sized light brown head. Smell and taste malts, roast, some alcohol, roasted malts, roast and malt bitter. Only lightly peat, which is good for me since I don’t like it. Medium to full body and carbonation.

Bottle. The leaves are turning brown, and I’ve had a waft of cold air therefor it’s time for the Barley Wine. Nose is apple, raisins, booze, plums, caramel, hints of licorice and bonfire toffee, emerging tangerine from the hops. Taste is apple, caramel, brown sugar, brandy, herbal hop note which is just on the cusp of resinous, figs, fruit cake, leading to a pleasing bitter orange note in the finish which prevents it being cloying. An exceptionally well balanced barley wine.

330 ml bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted bread, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, dark fruits, and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, raisin, plum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted bread, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted bread, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark fruits, and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and moderately slick/sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American barleywine style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark fruits, and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle (8.5% ABV) from Drinkmonger. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of orange, toffee and floral hops. Flavour of caramel, grapefruit and a peppery finish. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Drinks easily for the strength. Another tasty beer from this brewery.
