Description
110 years of Contreras in a 190 year old brewery. In 1818 Brewery Latte was founded as a typical farm-brewery. In the second half of the 19th century the company was led by Valère Latte who sold the brewery in 1898 to René Contreras. In 1920 René Contreras chose to sell his brewery to his nephew Marcel Contreras. it was Marcel who would transform the brewery into a modern 20th century company. He shaped the buildings as they currently still remain. In 1982 Marcel's son Willy became the sole manager of the brewery. At the start of the 21st century Ann Contreras, the only daughter of Willy Contreras, and her fiancée Frederik De Vrieze gradually took over the daily management of the brewery.

I had the Carlos and the Valeir Donker version next to eachother. They must indeed be regarded as the same beer, although there are small differences. Carlos: Brown sugar and pineapple in the aroma. Sweet flavor with caramel, brown sugar and pineapple. Initial hopbitterness is overshadowed by the sugary sweetness (6 3 6 3 10 = 2.8) Valeir Donker: Brown sugar aroma. Caramelly sweet flavor with pineapple. Initial hopbitterness comes back in the aftertaste. The bitterness is somewhat stronger as in the Carlos version. Hence the slightly higher rating.

Golden color, just a bit of malt in the aroma, nothing more. Medium to full bodied. Just a bit hoppy, somewhat perfumed. Grainy and grassy with apple. Even a hint of candy sugar. Decent pilsener, not spectacular, but there is a lot of difference from the pilsener giants.

Amber color, lasting frothy head, just a touch of haziness. Vinous aroma with grapes and pear. Absolutely bone dry. Bitter flavor, vinous and just a hint of wood. Apple and grapes, with just a touch of tartness. Bitter and fruity aftertaste. Very tasty and complex. JorisPPattyn is right. Drink this!

Light orange color, hazy. Hoparoma, somewhat dusty with vanilla. Sweetish, very hoppy flavor, almost creamy with vanilla. Great quality beer, not as deep and complex as Contreras Mars, but with a very fine taste. Tap, Café de Engel Oldenzaal. Malty aroma. Malty sweet buttery flavor, with loads of mango and peach. Lemon and vanilla. Hopbitterness comes up and persists in the aftertaste. Lovely!

Many thanks for this beer to Eric De Geyter.
