Description
110 years of Contreras in a 190 year old brewery. In 1818 Brewery Latte was founded as a typical farm-brewery. In the second half of the 19th century the company was led by Valère Latte who sold the brewery in 1898 to René Contreras. In 1920 René Contreras chose to sell his brewery to his nephew Marcel Contreras. it was Marcel who would transform the brewery into a modern 20th century company. He shaped the buildings as they currently still remain. In 1982 Marcel's son Willy became the sole manager of the brewery. At the start of the 21st century Ann Contreras, the only daughter of Willy Contreras, and her fiancée Frederik De Vrieze gradually took over the daily management of the brewery.

Tight foamy white head on a hazy amber coloured body. Confectionery, stone fruit & yeast aroma. Medium bodied, foamy frothy & dry on the back. Bubble gum, nectarine, sweet & grainy tastes with a lightly hopped tangy finish. I've had worse.

Quadrupel created to honour Willy Contreras, the 'godfather' of this quiet but solid brewery a dozen miles south of Ghent; at Huzaar in Ghent. Pale yellowish white, creamy, dense, membrane-lacing, stable head on a very dark chocolate brown robe, almost blackish and in that sense darker than average for the genre. Aroma of hard caramel, strong artificial iron (head stabilizer), ground walnuts, nutmeg, brown honey, hints of pear, brown bread, moist white pepper, old dried prunes, tea, 'graanjenever', clove. Sweetish onset, candi-sugary with restrained fruity hints of pear, medlar and prune, as well as dried blueberries, medium carbonated; slick mouthfeel, hard-caramelly and brown-bready malt core with a toasty edge, but also this outspoken metallic effect. Autumn leaves, clove and nutmeg in the finish, tea-like herbal hops providing some bitterness accentuating the toasty element, warmed by 'jenever'-like alcohol. Bittersweet, bit earthy and bready finish. Too metallic for its own good - added iron is never a good thing but certainly not in a quad - and even if the rest is relatively well-structured, I am not convinced at all here, especially with the great trappist quads in mind; frankly I do not understand the raving reviews below...

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a nice thick creamy white head. Aromas of pale fruits and spice. Taste has lots of full on peppery spice with more pale fruity notes and a dry finish. Alcohol well hidden. Medium body, average sparkly soft fizz on the palate and smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Not a bad beer but other than peppery spicy there is no real stand out flavours. Still it goes down nice enough and good mouthfeel.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a dark brown colour with a huge thick creamy beige head. Aromas of dry dark fruits, chocolate, caramel and brown bread. Taste has more dry dark fruits, chocolate and caramel coming through. Added notes of toasty brown bread, roasted malts and a little brown sugar. Medium to full body, soft carbonation and smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Lovely balanced beer and not too sweet which i like. Way above average Dubbel. Very good.

Aromas of stoney fruits, peaches, apricot, floral and citrus with also a hint of peppery spice. Taste is the same notes again with just a hint of the peppery spice, sweetness and a gentle hop on the finish. Medium body with average carbonation and very slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice fruity full flavoured Blond.
