Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

330ml bottle. Clear, dark ruby red colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Fruity, dark malty aroma, notes of dark berries, a touch of plum. Taste is dark malty, fruity, notes of dark berries and plum, dry overtones with a touch of fruit parings, a quite "neutral" touch of yeast, not really spicy, close to hay, very subtle hints of chocolate.

Bottle @ East of Eden, shared with my sister. Reddish brown color. Big off white head with good retention and fair lacing. Aromaβs of herbal and flowery hops, hop bitterness. Flavor is moderate bitter with a malty sweet backbone. Medium bodied. Finishes a bit dry, rather bitter. Nice, need to re-rate @ home sometime.

Bottle from Beer Central, Sheffield. Very dark, clear, cola brown. Minimal, bubbly, tan head. Blackcurrant. Dark malt. Some liquorice. Some smoke. Taste is fruity dry. Smokiness on the palate. Overly carbonated, though. Sweetness on the finish. Mostly dry. Light bitterness, too.

Bottle, 7.0%. Sweet and roasted aroma, vanilla, mild smoke. Black colour. Stable light brown head. The flavour has a nice roasted note along with a little smoke and a mild sweetness. There is also a little flowery hop note, giving it a bit of jam character. It has a very late, and very bitter roast barley bitterness.

Bottle, 8.0%. Caramelly aroma, hint of pine. Cloudy amber colour. Good stable off-white head. The flavour starts off very bitter. Then comes a distinct caramelly and piney hop flavour. The bitterness just keeps on going, which is a shame, because it is really a bit rough and unpleasant. High carbonation. Underneath the bitterness is a rather interesting and pleasant caramelly maltiness along with a good and cleansing hop flavour.
