Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Bottle from Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Cloudy amber with a thick, fluffy head. Aroma is caramel, digestive biscuit, some tinned peaches? Taste is biscuity dry. Long dry finish. Quality beer.

Bottled, BB 27/11/14, large sample. Initially clear, later bit hazy. golden color, huge rocky off-white head. Aroma has citrus, coriander, spicy yeast, flowery hops. Bit fruity of banana as well from yeast, some sweetness. Slight bitterness in taste, more sweetness, quite dry though. Quite high on carbonation. Bit watery in the finish. Aroma is quite decent, but it lacks some flavor.

How: Draught.
Where: De Republiek, Bruggs.
Appearance: Black colour with a brown head.
Aroma: Liquorice, roasted coffee, malt.
Body: Nice body with a good carbonation.
Flavour: Liquorices, a bit of smoke, roasted malt, roasted coffee.
Comment: A nice porter. Not sure if it a smoked, doesn’t feel smokey enough for it. I’ll treat it and enjoy it as a porter.

Bottled, BB 05-02-14, large sample. Clear ruby color, medium frothy light brown head. Aroma of spicy belgian yeast, lots of caramel, hint of dark bread, Poperinge hops which give a hint of melon and pear. Taste has some sweetness, caramel again, medium dry, quite high on carbonation. Although it’s only 6% it does give some sense of alcohol. Finish is a bit thin and watery, that’s disappointing actually. Quite typical belgian double styled beer.

11.2oz bottle at Brasserie V. Thick orange-red body, thin steady beige head. Fluffy, cloudy, effervescent body, very light and easy on the palate. Pronounced hop bitterness, some nice melon tones as well as a classic dry "Belgian" feel. Big and full bodied, a pretty respectable beer. Well balanced. Not mindblowing, but a a cool new addition to Belgiums portfolio.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice three centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of smoke, soy sauce, peat, tons of roasted malt, oak and bunches of vanilla pods. Medium-bodied; Dense smoked peat flavour with some beef, mushrooms, vanilla, oak, scotch and tar in here as well - strong flavour throughout - even on the finish. Aftertaste is quite complex with a good smoked note, some hits of the meaty and soy sauce flavours and a caramel sweetness that lasts, along with some spices. Overall, a nice smoked beer with tons of flavours, some of them really good and some of them not - but they generally work well! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from De HopDuvel in Gent, Belgium on 16-August-2013 for €1,45 sampled across the border here in my hotel room in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg on 18-August-2013.

33cl bottle, BB 05/12/14. Hazy, deep amber in color with a thick, beige, lasting head. Resiny, piney aroma with caramel. Flavor has caramel, pine, bitter hops. Finish is bitter with gooseberries and sweetness later on. not that fresh, but still quite tasty. Slightly sticky with some alcohol pushing through at first, but disappears later on.
