Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Amazing, a brew that started only recently, and which is already very good! Clear dark brown color, short but lasting brown head. Aroma of prune, grapes, roasted malt, sugar cane. Very strong and penetrating. Full taste of roasted and caramel malts, bit spicy, sweet, some chocolat. Fruity, malty and sweet. Very nice!

Bottled. Dark brown opaque colour, huge foamy/creamy brownhead. Very complex aroma, malts, almond, nuts, alcohol, sweet fruit and caramel. Flavour of almond, nuts, sweet alcohol, raisins, plum and caramel. Aftertaste is plummy with strong sweetness. Absolutely lovely palate. Wonderful brew, which excellently hides it’s ABV. Smooth and soft yet very complex! Thanks omhper!

Bottled. Hazy pale golden. Fruity buckwheat aroma. Fresh with rounded lively mouthfeel and an unusually solid maltiness for a witbier. Estery notes of tangerine. Very drinkable.

Bottled vintage 2005
Dark honey brown, good creamy white head. Berry-like, a bit wheat aroma, notes of banana. Quite acidy-lemony, didn’t expect that from 5.5% beer. Medium-bodied. A bit spicey, wheat cuts the edges. Though candy sugar is added not much sweetness. (7/4/7/4/15 3.7)
Re-rated as "Moeder Lambic Amber", BB 06/2008
Hazy amber color, small white head. Banana aroma with wheaty notes. Very crisp carbonated lemony, slighlty sweet and spicey (orange peel, coriander). Dry wheaty aftertaste. Interesting mix of witbier and hefeweizen. (6/3/7/3/13 3.2)

Bottled 33cl (BB 07/2007)
Almost opaque black, big foamy tanned head. Rye-bread, chocolat, berries, hay and roasted malts in the nose. Full-bodied. Sweet, tickling carbonation. Chocolate, candy sugar, metal notes. Huge ageing potential but didn’t impress me. Don’t believe the hype.

RBSG Thanks to Jens for filling his magic suitcase with exotic brews from afar. A RB European gathering would be a pleasure to attend! This one starts with a murky dark brown pour that fills the rest of the glass with a big frothy off white head. Light malt aroma that is backed up by a moderate sweetness on the tongue. The alcohol is well hidden in this brew, but a bit more complexity would be nice.

2004 Vintage bottle at Delirium Cafe, Brussels, Belgium
Light brown, creamy head, which diminishes totally. Deep brown bodied. Stoutie aroma: heavy malts of coekies, toasted, caramel. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter, somewhat spicy initial flavour. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter (long) finish. Fully bodied. This beer can be situated between a Rochefort 10 and a Westy 12. It has some spiciness as the Westy and has the malts of Rochefort 10. The Struise Brouwers have a recipe for a classic beer as Oerbier, Orval, ...
