Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Dull chestnut colour; good beige head. Sour, lactic and even acetic acid aromas, severe. Very dry, extremely woody with a perfect lactic/acetic balance. Complex without showing. Very dry, agreable, certain slickness. Great beer, but oh, so severe!

2006. This beer exceeds my high expectations. It did foam from the bottle, but not completely out of control. It is a thick beer and very dark brown. There is a thick layer of sediment in the bottle, which I poured in to the glass. The aroma has sweet maple, malt, and spices. I do smell the cardamom. There is just a touch of alcohol on the nose, but it does not overwhelm the other aromas. Flavor is predominatly sweet. There is malt, beef, gin, tobacco, fermenting pear, and unsweetened cocoa. The alcohol is expertly integrated and its only noticeable presence is a light and pleasant burn that only shows itself after the beer has been swallowed. Thick, and perfect mouthfeel.

(Bottle 150 cl) Bottle # 003. Label claims 10% alcohol. Pours a hazy, pale golden - looks almost like a witbier. Extremely lively, the rough and dense head keeps on flowing. Fruity and fresh aroma. Solid body, but not overly so. Lightly sweet malts with only a very subdued bitterness. Almost champagne-like. I really enjoyed this a lot. 240207

Bottle Hazy to muddy, orange body. Off-white, frothy-rocky head. Aroma of oranges, hops, caramel, yeast and fresh citrus. Quite complex and well balanced aroma. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Somewhat astringent, but not in a bad way. Quite well balanced and a good complexity for a white.
