Established in 2003
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Bottled. Cloudy dark ruby, minimal head. Concentrated aroma of ripe fruits and caramel. Sweet and very malty, desne and compact. Full bodied. Though sweet it’s never cloying instead it’s warming and complex with flavours of strawberries, caramel and banana cake. A very well made sipping beer.

75cl bottle BBE 02/07. This beer for me, sums up Ratebeer. In November 2005 I had to go to Antwerp for work at short notice. Knowing that I would be staying close to The Kulminator, I put a post up on the Forum on this site asking that if I only had 2-3 drinks in the pub, what should I have. Almost without exception, people suggested Struise Pannepot. Getting that kind of advice is indispensible. Pannepot is only one of three 5/5 scores I’ve given. Since then I’ve followed Struise with interest and I’ve had the good fortune to meet the guys behind the beers on a couple of occasions and I’m pleased to say that they are tremendous people. I picked this bottle up at the Low Countries RB Meeting in Antwerp last Sept. as part of the Kook farewell to Europe tour with Maeib and Duff, a great weekend which I owe to the Ratebeer site and people I’ve met through it. So thanks. The beer is very, very dark brown/red with thin lasting beige tan head. Lovely sour fruit aroma. Bit of wood too. Sour dark fruits of dark plum, black cherry and damson in mouth. But it’s not overly sour, it’s balanced by some fruity sweetness too. That sour aroma with dark fruits and touch of bitter choc is tremendous. The fruit in the mouth is just so pleasant, sour and sweet at the same time. Finish has drying sourness and more black cherry and damson. Just so well balanced, the sourness never over runs it. The wood adds to the whole experience. Overall it’s a great Flemish dark sour beer. The fruit is both balanced and outrageous at the same time. 4.6/5 Re-rate, 75cl bottle at Kulminator. This keeps getting better, some yeast has woken up and given it a very soft carbonation. The flavour in the mouth is now sublime. One of the best sours, best beers full stop I’ve ever had. Every time I had another beer I wished it was this and it wasn’t. I was so jealous of another couple having this later in the evening. Now in my definite top 10 beers of all time due to this bottle. Exquisite and unlike any other beer I’ve had. It takes you to another place. Sometimes my palate tells me when I have drunk something of sheer quality and this is one of those times. Can’t wait for the new version or to have this again on the old version at the Kulminator.

Bottle. This, the third Struise beer this evening stayed in the bottle for as long as we needed it to. Unclear, brown color with a beige head. Malt, caramel and berries in the aroma. Quite malty flavor with a vague sournessm berries and some faint notes of cigar-smoke. Full body and a long sweet finish with caramel and some berries. Quite nice. (070317)

Bottled. Like with the witte we shared some minutes earlier, this beer wanted to escape the bottled quicker than what was intended. In the glass it had a golden-orange color, hazyness and a large off-white head. The aroma had a vague fruityness, some malt and caramel. Nice spicynes and maltyness in the flavor. Medium, fizzy mouthfeel and a malty and a bit fruity finish. Nice, but I feel it is a bit malty, like the Struisse wit. (070317)

Bottled. We had a mini-tasting at Sigmunds hotel-room before we went to a beer-dinner, and this one and the Kloeke blond from the same brewery volcanoed all over the floor. Poor cleaning lady. Well, when we finally had some in our glasses, it looked a bit unclear, golden-orange and with a nice, white head. Quite malty nose for a wit, with caramel and a weak hoppiness. Malt, caramel and some spicy hints in the flavor. Medium body and a short finish with malt and some hops. A bit too malty for a wit, and a much more interesting aroma than flavor. The volcano-like behaviour when we opened it, was probably due to the too high serving temperature. (070317)

Bottle; Nose of light clovey spices, caramel and a little tartness; Slightly hazy copper with a small yellowish head; flavor is caramel, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg spices, and a light acetic acisd finish; Not sour enough to be a flemish sour, but not a great tripel.

Bottle, 10% at Kulminator, Antwerpen. Stable white head. Sweet and fruity, ripe fruit, aroma. Sweet, spicy and yeasty flavour. The flavour is very vinous with a warming alcohol note. Soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Yeasty aftertaste. 7 4 7 4 16
2008 version at LCRBM08. 8 3 8 4 19
Bottle, 10.0%. I do not know what year it is from, but it states BB 2013. Gusher! Good vanilla aroma, rather boozy, but nice. Murky dark amber colour, seems almost clear but has a massive amount of yeast chunks whirled up by the gushing. The flavour is sweetish with some vanilla, cigarbox and a little dried fruit. Good alcohol level to balance. Great mouthfeel in spite of the seemingly high carbonation. 7 2 8 4 18
