Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Bottle Pours a deep medium redish brown with a large fizzy coarse head. Lots of clumpy lacing. Aroma was slightly woody and sweet, with notes of dark pitted fruit, Flavor was similar, mild spiciness, carmel and raisons. Very lively carbonation, nearly got in the way. As it warmed and "vented" a bitr, it only got better. Lovely flavors and a real treat. Thanks to Jake for sharing this littel gem.

Muddy amber brown with a lasting off-white head. It may have been shaken a little and thus more muddy than it’s supposed to be. Aroma of malt and some fruit or berry (blackberries?), leather, and spice. Malt dominates the flavour which is rather sweet, but finishing dry, and has all the aroma elements even stronger. Did I sense a hint of wild yeast?

Bottle: Poured a dark mahoghany with a large, thick tan head. Nose is fruity and sweet, hints of plum, raison, and spice. The taste is this ultra creamy, yet slightly fizzy mouthful that tantalizes the tongue. A rich feeling of fruits, spices, raison, wine, caramel, and molasses. A very complex and inviting blend of flavors. Thanks Pantanap for sending this one!

330ml bottle. Mahogany body with a big dark beige head. Aroma is sweet malt, spicy, caramel, dry fruit and alcohol. Flavor is much the same, a complex and delicious sweet, spicy and warm ale. Not too sweet, just lovely.

Bottle 2006, at csbosox KC tasting 4/14. Final bottle of the evening, and it turned out to be my favorite. Aroma is sweet, mostly caramel coming through. Taste had the caramel, and nuttiness and a bit of cinnamon. All of these flavors were beautifully layered, and just a wonderful beer.

Bottle at the Struise Farm, many thanks to Carlo and Urbain for giving me the opportunity to taste this.
Hazy, yellow body. White, fizzy head. Fruity nose of apples and citrus. Complex and well balanced aroma. Moderately sour, lightly sweet flavour with some bitterness popping up in the end. Quite complex beer and very well balanced. It has the same fruitiness of the Aardmonnik, but off course didn’t inherit it’s maltiness, which is ok for a beer like this. Very interesting and rafinated beer: although not as complex as a classic gueuze, it’s very pronunciated and clearly says where it stands for and that’s what I want from a beer: honesty.

Thanks Papsoe. This was a good beer to drink in Long Friday. Hazy orange color, small white head. Spicey fruity aroma, at least ginger and clove are there plus some banana. Spicey, a bit hard mouthfeel. Not alcoholic at all. Some sugars over there are making this beer a bit like a Dutch ale. Solid beer, although not outstanding like Struise’s some other brews.
