Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Bottled (2006 vintage). Deep amber colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is gingerbread mainly. Flavour is the same along with some yeast, licorace, alcohol and caramelmalts. Pleasant!

Bottled. Cloudy mahogany colour, minimal airy head.Acidic black currant aroma. Sweet rounded malt accompanied my vinegary acidity. Surpisingly light bodied with notes of wood and raspberries. The heavy citric acidity creates a burning sensation in the finish which is somewhat detracting.

Very dark ruby-brown color, mostly vanishing beige head. Vinegar, soya sauce, birch wood and dark fruits in the nose. Flemish sour ale it is: sour with salted licorice, Jägermeister and vanilla flavors in the very wineous palate and with sticky mouthfeel. Very complex beer - for slow drinking.

Bottle, 75cl corked, at Københavnske Øldage. Thanks to the brewers for driving all the way from Belgium only to give away a lot of beers. Amazing! It poured murky brown, with a beige head. Lovely, complex aroma with dried fruits, sugar and spices. The flavor is lovely as well, but I feel it didn’t deliver as much as the aroma promised. Full, sweet mouthfeel. Even though my rating isn’t higher, I really liked it and would definately like to sample it again. (070512)

Bottled 75 cl (2006)
Thanks sayravai, very dark nut brown color, creamy cappucino head. Nose is not so strong, but I can trace tar, licorice and coffee. Smooth mouthfeel. Quite sweet, even syrapy - sweeter than "normal" Pannepot. Some licorice, dark fruits and candy sugar. A bit same than with Pannepot - way too sweet to be really on top.

Bottle. Brown color with a large frothy to creamy excellent lacing fully lasting light brown head. Aroma is moderate malty, spices, coffee, moderate to heavy yeasty, dry fruit, sugar. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with very good balance, harmonious, duration is average to long. Body is full, texture is creamy, carbonation is lively, finish feel is light alcoholic. Very nice ;o))

Bottle (an EXTRA from mgumby - hard to beat this). Prune juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper aroma - smells like Christmas baking. Opaque brown with small head. Wow - first sip overwhelming - a mouthful of spices and malt - my first impression was of a very full flavored mulled wine or Gluehwein - cinnamon and nutmeg most apparent - a mixture of malt and vinous flavors. Sharp acidity up front. An extremely unique beer.

One of the highlights of RBSG ’07. This beer might be the world’s second best tripel after Karmeliet. A very sweet and complex beer. Orange in color and an aroma that includes coriander, orange, bitter hops, and wild grass. Sweet and lots of sugar but also citrus, and pear, as well as more coriander and peach. A minor burn from alcohol, which is OK in a tripel. The beer is quite thick and like Syrup. Thanks for Yesper for carrying two giant bottles of this to the Twin Cities. I tasted from bottle 91.
