Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

No head, but the smallest of transparant ring. Near black beer with hints at red-brown. Very nice lactic acid nose, with serious hints of earthy aromas and dry chocolate powder. Cocoa made from top quality "full" dark chocolate and raw milk - but without any sweetness. Slightly vinous. More sweet, but held in check by mild acids (lactic predominantly) in the taste. Fruity hints, and a punch of, again, chocolate. Earthy and leafy embellishments, but the integration is perfect. Retronasal, I get streaks of red wine and blue cheese, some fusels. As the brewers are very aware themselves, even if the aftertaste and palate are quite satisfactory, the beer suffers from a total absence of carbonation, refermentation having never started. In the Pajottenland, this would be called "Loerik". Who cares about refermentation? This is the perfect accompagnment for a blue veined cheese. Stilton and Earthmonk for me! Second, refermented version Good yellowish head. Nice headvy nose, with chocolate and lots of lactic acid. Nice, woody, lactic, yoghurt and a spicey taste as from sweet Spanish pepper coulis. Full bodied, quite a lot of acidbburn. Superb. Second version is even better (the nose excepted), and especially the palate - appearance not taken into account - has been much bettered. The marks given are an average of both versions

Bottled. Clear brown beer with a reddish note. The head is small, creamy and beige, and it lasts for a while. Complex aroma with tobacco, sugar, dried fruits and spices. The alcohol is surprisingly missing. Quite sweet, but indeed pleasant flavor with brown sugar, tobacco, dried fruits, grapes and raisins. Creamy and sweet in the mouth. A beautiful beer I really loved to taste again, and hope to repeat. (060714)

(Bottle 33 cl) Deca version - my first 50 cl bottled Caulier version exploded in the cupboard. Pours a hazy amber golden with a tall and lively head that works its own way out of the bottle. Yeast sediment. Aroma of malt and yeast. Fairly solid body also with malt and yeast being the most prominent. Some alcohol presence before a dry finish. 290706

33cl bottle from those most generous guys at Struise brewery. I drank whilst watching Holland vs Argentina in the World Cup on a balmy evening in south east Kent. Like the football it has touches of breathtaking brilliance. It has the necessary hard working malty midfielders, the balance of the Dutch with perfect passing between aroma, mouth, palate and finish. The striking punch is there too, incisive acids on the generous raspberry fruit and some sourness on the finish (for the losing fans to complete the very lame footballing cliches). Clear russet colour, lasting white head. Raspberry malt on aroma with some toffee. Fullish in mouth, some toffee influenced raspberry, herby hops to finish

Draught at Købehavnske Øldage 2006. Hazy golden colour with a white head. Sweet malty with a nice wheat aroma. Smooth malty, slightly fruity, flavor. Hints of citrus. Fruity refreshing aftertaste, with some citrus hints.

33cl bottle from the brewery. Hazy dark gold beer with thick lasting white head. Delicate hop aroma. Lots of light fruits, citrus and floral notes. Attractive. Bit of biscuity malt. Sharp in mouth to start and then it softens. Delicate hop finish. I really like this. It has subtlety and elegence. Well done to all at Struise for another good beer. Fruits in particular are lovely.

Bieropholie Private import. 2005: Dark brown ale with little floaties. Thick resilient moka head. Agreeing with colleagues below, this is definitely has a very nice berry aroma, blueberry, with notes of licorice and caramel. In mouth, a nice sweet blueberry, candi sugar and licorice, with smooth alcohol lasting, and lighter bodied than expected. However, this is a teaser and a pleaser.

Bottle (vintage 2005): Poured opaque dark brown ale with a super huge foamy dirty brown head with perfect retention. Aroma of liquorice and sweet malt is incredibly well balance. Taste is an almost perfect balance between strong sweet malt with caramel and liquorice with some candi sugar (I would say a bit too much though) with a slightly funky ending from the yeast. Body is full and alcohol is very well masked. This beer is almost like a sweeter version of Rochefort 10 and there is not much more praise I can give to this beer.

On draught at the Struise shop. Really must thank everyone at Struise for the evening I had. Cloudy gold/orange colour with thick white head. Some orange, bit bleached, nice wheat. Bit of lemon. Easy drinking witte, some spice. Nice zesty lemon/orange on the end.

Bottled (as Moeder Lambic Amber). Hazy nutbrown/orange colour, mediumsized white head. Barnyard, wheat and malts in aroma. Flavour is wheat and malts with very unpleasant sweetness. Refreshing though, but still boring beer.
